Backlinks for Art Websites, Built From the Work Itself

For artists, galleries, illustrators, print sellers and art schools whose work is seen everywhere except in search. We turn exhibitions, credits and art writing into links that point people back to your own site.

“We keep artists off spammy sites and off any site that has nothing to do with art.”

No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.

  • Your name is the keyword. Art searches are often for an artist, a gallery or a style, and links that carry your name build exactly that.
  • Credit where it is owed. Your images already travel the web; we help turn uncredited use into links back to your site.
  • Art world outlets. Art writers, niche based blog owners, influencers and exhibition pages. We skip unrelated sites even when their scores are high.

01Backlinks Building Service

Start here.

Artists, galleries and print sellers rarely think of links as part of the work. The best way to build "backlinks for Art Websites, but better yet, your art website" is to contact us directly, and let us find where your work is already being talked about. Most artists have links waiting to be collected before anyone writes a pitch.

How art actually gets found in search

Art searches work differently from most. Some are for a name: an artist someone saw at a fair, a gallery a friend mentioned. Some are visual: a style, a subject, a medium, and the results lean heavily on images. Some are local, such as galleries or framers nearby. And more and more are conversations with AI search, asking who paints in a certain style or where to buy original work.

In every one of those, links decide whose site the search engine trusts to answer. When you search an artist's name, the top result is often a marketplace, a social profile or an old exhibition page, because those sites have more links than the artist's own. Your site is where you control the story, the prices and the enquiry, so it should be the one that ranks.

Backlinks are not the only thing that counts. Pages for each work with a proper title, medium, dimensions and a few sentences of context matter, and so do good image file names and alt text. But without links from the art world, few people outside your own circle will find the site, however good it looks.

The same holds for AI search. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Mode for painters working in a particular style, the answer is assembled from sources those systems already consider reliable: reviews, gallery pages, art publications. An artist who is mentioned and linked across that world gets named. An artist who exists only on their own site and a few social profiles usually does not. Links are still a major indicator that a site deserves to be looked at, whatever year it is.

Where art world links come from

The art world already publishes a great deal about artists. The work is in turning that publishing into links that point at your own site instead of a platform's page.

Source How the link happens What to do
Gallery and dealer pages Your artist profile on a gallery that shows you Ask for a link to your own site on every profile
Exhibitions, fairs and open studios Exhibitor and participant lists Check every event you have been part of, past and present
Arts councils and residencies Grant, residency and award recipient pages Request the link when the announcement goes up
Art writers and critics Reviews, interviews and features Offer access, images and a clear statement about the work
Art schools and teaching Visiting artist, alumni and workshop pages Keep your bio and link current with every school you have worked with
Uncredited use of your images Blogs and articles that used your work Ask for a credit link, politely and promptly

That table is the core of most art link campaigns. On top of it, Get Found adds outreach to niche based blog owners, influencers and art publications with real readers, so your work appears in articles written for people who buy and follow art.

Image credits are links you have already earned

Art is shared constantly, and most of it is shared without credit. Your painting on a design blog, your illustration in a listicle, your print on an interior styling page: each is a publisher who wanted your work and forgot to link.

Recovering those credits is the most efficient link building an artist can do. The publisher has already decided your work belongs on their page, so a polite note asking for a credit link is often answered. We run reverse image searches on your best known works, list every use, separate the ones worth a link from the ones that breach your licence, and handle the requests.

Make the credit easy to give

  • Put your name and site in the image metadata so it travels with the file.
  • Publish each work on its own page so a credit can point to the piece, not just your home page.
  • Offer press images with a clear credit line for writers who would rather ask first.
Next step

name three of your works that get shared most often, and we will tell you how many sites are using them without a link.

Portfolio platforms help people find you, not your site

Portfolio sites, print on demand stores and social platforms are useful. They put your work in front of people. But many of them mark profile links as nofollow, and the platform, not you, collects the authority from the attention your work draws.

Keep those profiles complete and consistent, with the same name and the same link to your site everywhere. Then treat them as discovery, and do the link building on your own domain. If you also sell through photography or print channels, our page on backlinks for photography sites covers the image licensing side in more depth.

ask which of your profiles are worth the time and which are only collecting attention for the platform.

Anchor text for artists is mostly your name

In the art world, natural anchors are names: yours, your studio's, the title of a series or a show. That is good news, because searches for those names are exactly the ones that lead to commissions and sales. A healthy art profile is dominated by branded anchors, with a few descriptive phrases such as a medium and a place, used where a writer would say them.

Relevance is the other half. A link from a craft blog, an interiors magazine or a regional arts page tells a search engine what your work is and who it is for. A link from an unrelated finance blog does not, which is why we turn down spammy sites and sites with no connection to your work. Wedding illustrators and stationers have their own natural outlets, covered on our wedding site backlinks page, and illustrators who make data graphics should read about earning links with infographics.

How we build an art site's link profile

We start with what you have: the galleries, events and writers who already know your work, and the images already in circulation. That recovery work comes first because it is relevant, trusted and quick. Then our network of authors and outlets extends it with features, interviews and articles on art sites with real readers.

The result should hold up through Google's updates and through any competitor who tries to damage it, because every link reflects something real in your career. If you sell abroad, links in your buyers' language matter too, and our language pages, such as French backlinks for French-speaking audiences, explain how.

For the wider picture, see the backlink building services hub, learn how we plan around your budget on the backlink company page, and browse every niche and language in our backlinks building service. Then get in touch with Get Found and tell us about your work.

When someone searches your name, does your own site rank above the platforms that host your work?Marketplaces and social profiles often outrank the artist, which means the sale and the enquiry happen somewhere else.— / 100
How many sites use your images without a link back to you?Uncredited use is the easiest link an artist can recover, because the publisher already wanted the work.— / 100
Do your exhibitions, residencies and awards pages link to your site?Event and gallery pages are among the most trusted links in the art world, and they are often missed.— / 100
Are your artwork pages written so search engines can read what each piece is?Titles, medium, size, year and a few sentences of context turn an image file into a page that can rank.— / 100
What share of your links come from art related sites rather than general ones?Relevance tells engines what you are known for; links from unrelated sites say little about your art.— / 100
Why there is no example card on this page. A page showing a glowing “A” for an unnamed happy client is a picture, not a measurement. The first grade you see from us will be about your own business.

The questions that come up every time.

Do artists really need backlinks if their work is on social media?

Social platforms are where people discover art, but they rarely send search engines any signal about your own site. If someone hears your name and searches it, the result that wins is the one with the strongest links, and that is often a marketplace or a profile you do not control. Backlinks still matter no matter the date because they are how your own site becomes the answer to a search for you.

Are links from portfolio platforms worth anything?

They help people find you, but many portfolio and social platforms mark profile links as nofollow, so they pass little ranking value. They are worth keeping complete and consistent. The links that build your site's standing come from editorial pages: reviews, interviews, exhibition listings, gallery artist pages and art writers who mention your work in context.

How do I get a link when someone uses my artwork?

Run a reverse image search on your best known pieces, list the sites using them, and contact each one politely asking for a credit with a link to your site. Many publishers will add one gladly because they meant to credit you. Where the use breaks your licence, that is a different conversation. We can run this recovery as part of a campaign.

Can a gallery build links for the artists it represents?

Yes, and it helps both. Exhibition pages, artist profiles and press releases about shows attract links from local news, arts councils and art writers. Linking from those pages to each artist's own site, and from the artists' sites back to the gallery, builds a network of relevant links that reflects real relationships in the art world.

Should an art website buy guest posts?

Rarely. Most sites selling guest posts are general blogs with an art category bolted on, and a link there tells search engines nothing about your work. A paid feature in a genuine art publication is different, as long as it is labelled and the link marked sponsored. We look for editorial placements first.

Ask yours. The form reaches the people who would be doing the work.
