Why links still decide who gets looked at

No matter the date, the argument has not changed. A website without some really good backlinks will never pop up in search, will not rank, and gets drowned out by the competition. Search engines weigh many things, and links are not the only factor, but a link from a trusted site is still a major indicator that a website should even be looked at by Google, by Bing and by AI search in general.

What has changed is how well search engines spot the fake ones. The cheap tactics that worked a decade ago, such as directory blasts, article spinning, comment links and private blog networks, are now described by name in Google's spam policies. Our own guide to choosing an SEO company warned that cheap link builders use black hat methods that push a site farther down the ranking ladder. Google's spam policies have only made that warning easier to back up since we wrote it.

A backlink company earns its fee by finding the few links that will matter to your site, rather than by producing as many links as possible. That means earning them on sites that will still be standing in five years, and keep the profile clean.

Every strategy starts with an audit of your profile

We do not quote a plan until we have seen what is already pointing at you. The audit pulls your links from Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, which show what the engines themselves have found, and adds a crawl from a third-party link index to fill the gaps. Then every linking domain is sorted.

What the audit looks at

  • Relevance. Is the linking site about your field, your town or your customers? Links from unrelated sites are flagged.
  • Real traffic. Does the site have visitors of its own, or does it exist to sell links?
  • Anchor text. The split between your brand, your web address, generic words and keyword anchors. A natural profile is mostly brand and URL.
  • Link velocity. When links arrived. Steady growth looks earned; a spike in one month looks bought or aimed at you.
  • Lost and broken links. Links that once pointed at you and no longer do, or point at pages that now return an error.
  • Risk. Network sites, hacked pages, paid links without a label, and anything a reviewer would question.

The competitor gap

Next we run the same analysis on the three or four sites outranking you for the searches you care about. Their profiles show which outlets already link in your field, which kinds of pages earn those links, and how far behind you are. The gap tells us where to start: the outlets that link to them and not to you are the first places to go.

Next step

send us the searches you most want to win and the sites above you, and the audit will show you the gap.

The best backlink strategy for your budget

Your budget changes the mix of links, while the quality bar stays where it is: a smaller budget buys fewer links that meet the same standard. The table shows how the plan shifts as the budget grows.

Budget Where it goes first What it adds
Starter Fixing and reclaiming: broken link targets, lost links, unlinked brand mentions, local citations A handful of relevant niche placements on sites your customers read
Growth Steady outreach to niche based blog owners and trade sites, plus content worth linking to Digital PR pitches to journalists, and expert quotes in industry articles
Authority PR campaigns around original data or news, influencer features Language and region campaigns, and links aimed at several sections of the site

The cheapest links are the ones you already earned and lost. A product page that moved without a redirect, a press mention that never linked, a partner who changed sites: reclaiming those costs a fraction of building new ones and often moves rankings first.

At every level, we spread links across the pages that need them. A profile where every link points at the home page looks odd and leaves your service pages with nothing. Our pricing is still being set, so the tiers above describe the mix and leave the cost to a conversation with you.

give us a budget range and we will show you what the first three months of links would look like at that level.

How every site is vetted before we place a link

Poor or spammy websites that are not relative to your product or service are off the table for us. In practice, that rule means a site has to pass six checks before your link goes on it.

  1. It is relevant. The site covers your field, your customers or your region, and the page the link sits on is about something connected to you.
  2. It has real traffic. Organic visitors that have held steady or grown, from the countries you sell in, not a sudden spike or a flat line.
  3. It is selective. It does not publish anything for a fee. We look at its other outbound links; a site linking to casinos, pills and loans in the same week fails.
  4. It is editorial. Real authors, real articles, pages people would read without the link in them.
  5. It is indexed and healthy. Its pages are in Google's index and the site is not carrying a penalty or a hacked section.
  6. The link is labelled honestly. If a placement involves payment, it carries the sponsored attribute Google asks for. If it does not, it is an editorial link earned on merit.

Sites that pass are added to our network for your niche. Sites that fail are never used for any client.

Ask us

if you have a list of sites someone offered to place links on, send it, and we will run them through the same six checks.

Relationships that pass real value

The relationships Get Found has built run deep with PR outlets, niche based blog owners and influencers, and with sites whose traffic is real and whose links pass real value. Each one does a different job in a profile.

  • PR outlets. News and trade publications that cover your field. A story or an expert quote earns a link that is hard to fake and brings readers with it. For real news, our low cost press release distribution is often the opening.
  • Niche based blog owners. The people who write for your customers every week. A mention in a respected niche blog is the most relevant link most businesses can get.
  • Influencers. Their links are usually labelled nofollow or sponsored, and that is fine: the value is the audience, the brand searches they trigger and the mentions that follow.
  • Sites with real traffic. Resource pages, associations, directories and partners people actually use, which pass both value and visitors.

We have a large network of authors and outlets across many niches and languages, and our Backlinks Building Service is where the placements happen. A health site's link plan leans on expert review, a law firm's link plan on bar associations and legal directories, and a local shop's map and citation links on the places nearby customers look.

Talk to us

tell us your field and we will tell you which of these four relationships would carry the most weight for you.

What a toxic link is, and what to do about it

A toxic link is any link that tells a search engine you tried to manipulate rankings. The usual ones are links from private blog networks, sites built only to sell links, hacked pages with links injected into them, auto-generated or spun content, foreign directories with nothing to do with you, and paid links without a sponsored label.

Most junk links are simply ignored. Google's systems are built to discount spam rather than punish every site it points at, so a few odd links are not an emergency. What deserves action is a pattern: links someone built on purpose, or a volume large enough to make up a real share of your profile.

How we clean a profile

  • Remove at the source first. Where a link was placed by a past agency or a partner, we ask for it to be taken down.
  • Disavow what cannot be removed. A disavow file tells Google to ignore the listed domains. We use it for deliberate schemes and attacks, never for links that are merely weak.
  • Answer a manual action. If Google has sent a manual action for unnatural links, we document the cleanup and help prepare the reconsideration request.
Next step

if you have a manual action notice in Search Console, send us a screenshot and we will tell you what the cleanup involves.

Negative SEO and malicious competitor action

Sometimes the bad links are not yours. A competitor, or someone paid by one, points thousands of junk links at your site, usually with exact keyword or offensive anchors, hoping Google will read them as your doing. It is less common than people fear, but it happens, and it does the most damage to sites with thin profiles.

We handle it in three steps. Watch: new links are monitored, so a spike in volume or a sudden change in anchors is caught within days, not months. Document: the attack is logged with dates, domains and examples, which matters if you ever need to explain it. Respond: the attacking domains go into the disavow file, and if the attack extends to fake reviews or pages about your business, our online reputation management service takes that side on.

Your best defence is the profile itself. A backlinks profile that can weather any Google update or malicious competitor action is one where the real links outweigh anything someone can buy and aim at you.

Call

if you have seen a wave of strange links or anchors in your reports, tell us the dates and we will check whether it is an attack.

How we work with you

The order is the same for every client. We audit, we agree a strategy and budget, we build the links month by month, and we watch the profile. You see every link: the site, the page, the anchor and whether it is editorial or sponsored. Our reporting cadence and format are still being set and are listed as pending on this page.

Links work best when they point at pages built to rank, so we check the targets too. Our website optimization services cover the on-site side, and you can test a page against a keyword before you call. The full category, from this strategy service to the niche and language pages, is on our backlink building services hub. When you are ready, start with an audit through the contact page.

What we would measure for your business.

The lines, opened upALL 6 UNSCORED UNTIL YOUR BUSINESS IS TESTED
How many of the domains linking to you are relevant to what you sell?Relevance is the first filter we apply, because a link from outside your field passes little and can look bought.— / 100
Which links do the three sites outranking you have that you do not?The competitor gap shows which outlets already link in your field and which kinds of pages they link to.— / 100
How is your anchor text split between brand, URL, generic and keyword anchors? An anchor profile heavy on exact keywords is one of the clearest signs of manipulation a reviewer looks for.— / 100
How many of your linking sites show real organic traffic?Sites with no visitors of their own rarely pass value, and many exist only to sell links.— / 100
Have new links appeared in a sudden spike you did not build? An unexplained surge of junk links or odd anchors is the usual first sign of a negative SEO attack.— / 100
How many links point at pages that now return an error?Broken and redirected link targets are earned authority leaking away, and the cheapest links to recover.— / 100
Why there is no example card on this page. A page showing a glowing “A” for an unnamed happy client is a picture, not a measurement. The first grade you see from us will be about your own business.

The questions that come up every time.

What does a backlink company actually do?

A good one does four things. It audits the links you already have and finds what is helping, what is wasted and what is risky. It plans which links you need, in what order, for the money you have. It earns or places those links on relevant sites with real readers, through outreach, PR and content worth citing. And it watches the profile afterwards, so a bad link or an attack is caught early. A company that skips the audit and sells a package is selling volume and calling it strategy.

How much should I spend on backlinks?

Enough to close the gap between you and the sites above you, at a pace that looks natural, and no more. That number depends on your field and your competition, which is why we start with an audit. A local service business in a quiet market may need a few strong local links and some fixes. A national brand in a crowded niche needs a steady campaign. Our own pricing is still being set and is marked pending on this page; we will not quote a number we have not published.

What is a toxic backlink?

A toxic backlink is one that tells a search engine you tried to manipulate rankings: links from link networks, hacked pages, auto-generated sites, unrelated foreign directories, paid links without a sponsored label, or a flood of exact keyword anchors. Most junk links are simply ignored by Google. The ones worth acting on are links you or a previous agency built on purpose, and patterns big enough to look deliberate.

Should I use Google's disavow tool?

Only when there is a reason. Google says most sites never need it, because its systems already ignore most spammy links. Disavowing makes sense when you have a manual action for unnatural links, when a past campaign built paid or network links that you cannot get removed, or when an attack is large and clearly aimed at you. Disavowing good links by mistake removes value you earned, so we review every domain before it goes in the file.

Can a competitor really hurt my rankings with bad links?

It is rarer than people fear, but it happens, and it is more likely to hurt a site whose profile is thin. When almost all of your links come from a handful of places, a few thousand junk links can make up most of the profile. A site with real links from real outlets is much harder to drown. We monitor new links, document attacks with dates and examples, and disavow when the pattern justifies it.

Can you promise rankings or link metrics?

No. Nobody controls how a search engine weighs a link, and third-party scores like domain authority are estimates made by tool vendors rather than by Google. We promise the things we control: the sites we use are relevant, have real readers and pass our vetting, paid placements are labelled, and you see every link we build. Our reporting format and cadence are still being set and are marked pending on this page.

Next step

Ask yours. The form reaches the people who would be doing the work.
