Brand Growth Strategies That Protect Margin, Perception and Trust
For ecommerce founders who can make sales happen and want to know whether those sales are building a business. We start with the numbers behind every order, then plan pricing, channels and marketing that grow the brand without giving away the margin or the trust it runs on.
“business builders first, and marketers second”
No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.
- Numbers before noise. We work out what each order really earns after every cost before recommending a single campaign.
- Growth you can keep. Pricing, discounts and channels planned so more sales also means more profit.
- Perception and trust protected. We treat the brand people believe in as the asset and do not spend it on short-term tactics.

Start here.
Selling more is easy if you are willing to give enough away. A brand growth strategy worth paying for grows sales without spending the things that make the brand worth owning. David's line is that Get Found is made of "business builders first, and marketers second." Over the years we have worked with many ecommerce companies and founders to build their businesses first, without destroying margins, brand perception or trust.

Business builders first, marketers second
Most marketing agencies are paid to produce marketing, so marketing is what they recommend. We start one step earlier, with the business the marketing is supposed to serve. If an order loses money, a campaign will only bring in more of those orders, and bring them in faster.
That comes from where we started. Get Found's founder started a tech and ecommerce company in the late 90s, and in the words of our own service page, "Our founders have been on all sides of business, from brick and mortar to full online development and engagement." You can see who we are on the Get Found team page. Between us, we have sat on the side of the table where the stock has to be paid for before it sells.
So a growth plan with us asks business questions first: what an order earns, what a customer costs to win, how long it takes for that cost to come back and where the cash is tied up. The choice of marketing, the budget for it and the order it runs in all come after those answers.
tell us your best seller, its price and roughly what it costs you to deliver, and we will tell you whether more marketing would add profit or just add orders that lose money.

Unit economics come before any spend
Every order carries a stack of costs that are easy to forget when you are looking at revenue. Growth only works when the margin left at the bottom of that stack can pay for winning the next customer.
| What we work out | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Contribution margin per order | Price minus cost of goods, payment and platform fees, shipping, packaging and expected returns |
| Cost to acquire a customer | What the ads, content and offers actually cost per new buyer, not per click |
| Payback | Whether the first order covers that cost, or whether you need the second and third order to get there |
| Repeat rate | How many buyers come back, and how soon, which decides what a customer is really worth |
| Cash cycle | How long money sits in inventory before it comes back as a sale |
Founders are often surprised by the answers. Products that sell fastest are sometimes the ones that make the least, and a small, quiet product line sometimes carries the whole business. Once you know which is which, you end up marketing a different set of products.
ask for a one-order profit walk-through on your top three products, and we will show you which ones growth should be built on.

Pricing and discount discipline
Price is the fastest lever on profit and the easiest one to damage. A price that is too low leaves nothing for marketing. Discounting as a habit is worse, because it lowers the price permanently while pretending it is temporary.
What we recommend instead of a code on every page
- Plan sales events, do not reach for them. A few planned events a year beat a code every time revenue dips.
- Reward the right behaviour. Loyalty offers for repeat buyers instead of blanket discounts for anyone with an email address.
- Raise order value instead of cutting price. Bundles, sets, and shipping thresholds set just above the average order.
- Protect the price across channels. If wholesalers or marketplace sellers undercut your own store, your best customers learn to buy elsewhere. Minimum advertised price policies exist for a reason.
- Test price increases. Many brands are underpriced for what they deliver, and a careful test costs far less than a year of thin margins.
Marketplaces make price discipline harder, because sellers compete for the same listing on price alone. David's 2017 guide put it bluntly: "More Sales Doesn't Always = More Profit."
send us your last twelve months of discount codes and promotions, and we will show you which ones paid for themselves.
05Ecommerce Marketing
Choosing channels in the right order
Every channel gives something and takes something. A brand that grows on one channel alone depends on that channel's owner for its future. The goal is a mix where no single platform can end the business with a policy change.
| Channel | What it gives | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Your own store | The customer, the data, the full margin | You have to bring the traffic |
| Search and content | Buyers who are already looking, at no cost per click | Time to build |
| Paid ads | Speed and scale | Margin, every single sale |
| Email list | Repeat sales at almost no cost per send | Consent and patience |
| Marketplaces | Ready buyers and trust | Fees, rules and the customer relationship |
| Wholesale and retail | Volume and reach | Margin and control over price |
The order you add them in matters too. For most brands, the store and the list come first, because everything else should feed them. Marketplaces can be a good place to start or to add volume, but if one marketplace is most of your business, our page on how to sell on Amazon and off Amazon lays out how to build the other half without losing what you have.
tell us where your sales came from last year, channel by channel, and we will tell you where the business is most exposed.

Brand perception: what customers believe before they buy
Perception sets the price a customer is willing to pay before they have read a word. Photography, packaging, the design of the store, the tone of the copy and the speed of the site all tell a shopper what kind of brand this is. A brand that looks cheap ends up having to price cheap.
None of this calls for expensive design for its own sake. What it calls for is a store that fits the product and the price, built around how your buyers actually shop. David's line from our design work is that "standing out is more important than ever", and our custom ecommerce website design work is built on it.
Perception is also damaged by things marketing teams do to hit a number: discount banners that never go away, pop-ups stacked on pop-ups, ad creative that promises more than the product delivers. Each one trades long-term brand value for a short-term sale, and the bill arrives later as lower prices and lower trust.
send us your store and two competitors you admire, and we will tell you honestly how your brand reads next to them.

Trust is the asset that takes longest to build
Trust is why a buyer chooses your store over a cheaper listing. It takes years to build, and one bad season can lose it, so we do not trade it away for any growth tactic.
- Real reviews only. Asked for honestly after purchase, never bought, never written by the brand.
- A clear returns policy. Easy to find before checkout, and honored the way it reads.
- Honest shipping times. A delivery date you can keep does more for you than a faster one you miss.
- Service that answers. Questions and problems handled quickly, by a person or a well-built assistant.
- No invented urgency. Fake countdown timers and "only 2 left" banners that are not true get noticed, and they get remembered.
- The same promise everywhere. Price, quality and service consistent across your store, marketplaces and wholesale partners.
ask us to read your store the way a first-time buyer would, and we will list every point where trust is gained or lost.

When not to scale
Sometimes our growth advice is to wait, because scaling a business with a leak makes the leak bigger. We tell founders to hold, or slow down, when:
- The cost of winning an order rises faster than the margin on it. Each extra sale is costing more than the last.
- Returns, complaints or review scores are slipping. Growth is reaching buyers the product does not suit, or operations are stretched.
- Stock cannot keep up. Advertising products that sell out produces refunds, angry customers and wasted spend.
- Service is already behind. More orders will make it worse, and the reviews will show it.
- Cash is tied up. Growth that needs more inventory than the business can fund is a cash crisis on a delay.
- One channel is carrying everything. Doubling down on a platform you do not control raises the stakes of its next rule change.
Holding steady while the cause is fixed is what keeps a business going long enough to grow.
Often the fix is not more marketing at all. A store that converts more of the visitors it already has makes every later dollar of advertising worth more, which is why conversion rate optimization for the store usually comes before a bigger budget. When the margin and the store are ready, ads managed to protect margin are how the scaling is done, one measured step at a time.
if your sales are growing and your bank balance is not, tell us, and we will help you find which of these leaks is responsible before you spend another dollar.

How we work with founders
A growth engagement starts with the numbers and the brand, and ends with a plan of action: what to fix, what to market, in what order and at what pace. The marketing in that plan can come from us across every service on our full service online marketing agency page, or from your own team.
For select brands and products, it can also become a commission based ecommerce partnership, where we fund the marketing up front and are paid out of the sales. That model only works when the unit economics work, which is why this page exists. The rest of our ecommerce marketing services are there for whatever the plan needs next.

What we would measure for your business.
The parts of this page we will not guess at.
The live site has never published a price for anything. Rather than invent a plausible-looking number, each item is here and blank until it is set.
Get these lines filled in for your business. It takes what you sell, where, and your site.

The questions that come up every time.
What is a brand growth strategy for an ecommerce business?
It is the plan for growing sales in a way that also grows the business: which products to push, at what price, through which channels, with how much discounting, and how fast. A good one starts with the economics of a single order and works outward to marketing, rather than starting with an ad budget and hoping the numbers follow. It also says what the brand will not do, such as racing to the bottom on price, because those limits protect the margin and the trust the brand depends on.
Why do you look at margins before marketing?
Because marketing multiplies whatever is already there. If an order earns a healthy margin, more orders mean more profit. If an order barely breaks even after fees, shipping and returns, more orders mean more work, more cash tied up in stock and no more money in the bank. We have to know which situation you are in before we spend anything, and if it is the second one, the first job is pricing and costs, and traffic can wait.
How do discounts damage a brand?
Used often, they teach customers that full price is for people who did not wait. Sitewide codes cut margin on orders that would have happened anyway, attract buyers who leave for the next deal, and make the regular price look inflated. Discounts are not always wrong: a planned seasonal event, a reward for loyal buyers or a bundle that raises order value can work. The problem is discounting as a habit, because it is very hard to stop once customers expect it.
When should a brand not scale its advertising?
When the cost of winning an order is rising faster than the margin on it, when returns or complaints are climbing, when stock cannot keep up, or when customer service is already behind. Scaling in any of those conditions turns a fixable problem into an expensive one. It is also worth pausing when growth depends on one channel you do not control. Holding steady while the cause is fixed is a strategy too, and often the right one.
Should we sell on Amazon, on our own site, or both?
Most brands are stronger with both, in the right order and with clear roles. Amazon brings buyers who are ready to purchase, but takes fees on every sale, controls the customer relationship and can change its rules at any time. Your own site gives you the customer, the data and the margin, but you have to bring the traffic. The answer depends on your product, price and margin, and our page on selling on and off Amazon works through it.
Can a brand growth plan be done on a commission basis?
For select brands and products, yes. Our commission only program funds the marketing up front and is paid out of the sales the plan produces, which means our interest in protecting your margin is the same as yours. Most brands will not fit that program, and the growth work on this page is often what gets a brand ready for it. Brands that do not fit can work with us on standard terms.
Ask yours. The form reaches the people who would be doing the work.
