Custom Ecommerce Website Design Built to Stand Out and Sell

For store owners whose template got them started and is now holding them back. We research, design, build and test a store around your products and buyers, then move you onto it without losing the rankings you already earned.

“It's a Big Internet. You've Got To Stand Out.”

Talk to us about a custom store

No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.

  • Designed around how your buyers decide. Layout, product pages and checkout follow the way your customers actually choose, instead of the order a theme demo set.
  • Built to load only what you use. The store carries no sliders you switched off and no scripts left by apps you removed last year.
  • Moved without losing rankings. Every old URL is mapped and redirected before the new store goes live.

01Custom Ecommerce Website Design

Start here.

Most online stores start on a template, and most of them still look like one. David's view of where that leaves a business is short: "standing out is more important than ever, alongside our highly conversion optimized custom Ecommerce designs to help scale businesses." This page explains what that means in practice, how we design and build a store, and how you get to one from wherever you sell today.

Template stores look alike because they share the same parts

A theme marketplace sells the same handful of layouts to thousands of shops. Hero banner, three product tiles, a reviews strip, an email pop-up: the shopper has seen your homepage before they arrive, just with somebody else's products in it. That is fine for a first store. It stops being fine when you are paying for traffic and asking a stranger to trust you with a card number.

The sameness runs deeper than looks. Template stores share the same category structure, the same product page order and the same checkout, because the platform decided those things for everyone at once. Your products, margins and buyers are your own, and the store that sells them should be built around them.

Back in 2015 we asked whether a template builder could carry a real business in our blunt look at Wix for SEO and ecommerce. The point still holds: a URL structure the platform chose for every shop was never chosen with your business in mind.

A custom build changes five things a theme cannot

Speed

A theme ships code for every feature anyone might want: sliders you never turned on, fonts you never picked, scripts left behind by apps you removed. A custom build loads only what your store does. On a phone with a weak signal, that difference often decides whether the page loads before the buyer gives up.

Structure

You decide how categories nest, what a product URL says and how filters behave, so the site is organised the way your buyers shop and the way search engines read. That structure is the groundwork our ecommerce SEO program builds on.

Checkout control

The checkout is where a store loses the most money, and on a hosted platform it is the part you can change least. Built for you, the checkout follows your products: subscriptions, bundles, trade accounts, deposits, made-to-order, whatever the business actually sells.

Data ownership

Products, customers, orders and reviews sit in a database you control instead of being spread across a platform account and a dozen apps' servers. You can report on it, connect it to your inventory and email, and take it with you.

Design for conversion

Every layout choice is tested against one question: does it help the right buyer decide? It is the same discipline we bring to conversion rate optimization for online stores, applied before launch instead of after.

Ask us

not sure which of the five is costing you most? Ask for a walk-through of your current store against each one.

How we design and build your store

We have been optimizing ecommerce websites for page 1 rankings for over 20 years, and the build process comes out of that work. Each stage exists because skipping it is how stores lose rankings and sales at launch.

  • Research. Your buyers, your competitors, your analytics and search data, and what your products need a page to explain.
  • Wireframes. Plain grey layouts of the templates that matter (home, category, product, cart, checkout), so structure is agreed before anyone debates colours.
  • Prototype. A clickable design in your brand that you can use on your own phone, to test the path from landing to purchase.
  • Build. The real store, coded to the approved prototype, with your catalogue, payment gateway, shipping and tax rules connected.
  • Test index. Every page of the new store listed on one private, unindexed page, so you and we can click through all of it and check every old URL against its new home.
  • Launch. Redirects live, search engines notified, monitoring on, and a close watch on rankings and orders through the first weeks.
Next step

tell us where your store is today (an idea, a live shop, or one you have outgrown) and we will tell you which stage we would start from.

Four routes in: where your store lives now

Most of the stores we talk to are not starting from nothing. They are on a platform that got them this far and is now in the way. Each route has its own problems and its own migration plan, so each has its own guide.

From WordPress and WooCommerce

Open and flexible, but a store assembled from plugins is a store maintained plugin by plugin. Our guide to moving a WooCommerce store off WordPress covers the conflicts, the update cycle and the database clean-up.

From Shopify

Quick to start and well run, but the theme language, the checkout rules and the monthly app bill set the ceiling. Read what changes when you leave Shopify, including how its fixed URL folders are mapped.

From Squarespace

Handsome templates built for portfolios first and stores second. The Squarespace store migration guide deals with catalogue limits, SEO control and the export.

From Amazon

Not a website at all, but where many brands built their sales. The plan for selling direct beyond Amazon shows how to own the customer without walking away from the marketplace.

Call

tell us which platform you are on and roughly how many products and pages you have, and we will outline your migration in one conversation.

Store builds and migrations have been on our list since 2014

When this site published its ecommerce online marketing services page in 2014, two of the first lines were "Building out Your Retail Website on the Right Ecommerce Site Platform" and "Full E-commerce Website Migration to a scalable Platform." Custom design keeps that same promise, and the tools for it have improved.

What has changed is how much the store's design now decides. Search engines read your structure and AI search reads your product data. Paid clicks also need a page that earns them. That is why design sits inside our full service online marketing and carries on after the day the store goes live.

Start with the store you have

Send us the store as it is today, the platform, the rough size of the catalogue and what is frustrating you about it. We will tell you honestly whether you need a custom build at all. Some stores are better served by fixing the theme they already have, and when that is the case we will say so and show you what to fix.

What we would measure for your business.

The lines, opened upALL 6 UNSCORED UNTIL YOUR BUSINESS IS TESTED
Does your store look like the theme demo it came from?We compare your home, category and product pages against the stock theme and your three closest competitors to see where you blend in.— / 100
How fast does a product page load on a phone?Mobile load time on the page that takes the order, measured on a mid-range phone over a normal connection, not on your office desktop.— / 100
How many steps sit between a product page and a paid order?Every click, field and redirect from add to cart to the thank-you page, because each one is a place a buyer can leave.— / 100
Do your category and product URLs say what is on the page?Whether the URL structure is one you chose for buyers and search engines, or one the platform imposed on everybody.— / 100
Where do your customer, order and review records actually live?A map of which data sits in your own database and which sits inside a platform account or a third-party app you rent.— / 100
What do your apps, plugins and add-ons cost you each year? The total of every subscription and licence the store needs to run, set against what a store built for you would carry.— / 100
Why there is no example card on this page. A page showing a glowing “A” for an unnamed happy client is a picture, not a measurement. The first grade you see from us will be about your own business.

10Custom Ecommerce Website Design

The questions that come up every time.

What is the difference between a custom ecommerce site and a premium theme?

A premium theme is a finished design sold to many shops, which you then fill with your products. A custom store starts from your products, buyers and margins, and the design, structure and checkout are built to fit them. The practical differences show up in speed, because the store carries only the code it uses, in URL and category structure, which you choose, and in the checkout, which follows the way your business sells rather than the way the platform sells for everyone.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I move to a custom store?

Not if the move is run properly. Rankings are lost when old URLs disappear without a redirect, when page content is thinned out, or when a store launches with crawl errors nobody checked. Every migration we run starts with a full map of your current URLs, gives each one a 301 redirect to its closest new page, and is checked page by page on a private test index before launch. We then watch rankings, crawl reports and orders through the weeks after cutover.

Is a custom store worth it if my business is still small?

Sometimes it is not, and we will tell you so. If you have a small catalogue, modest traffic and a theme that converts, fixing what you have is usually the better spend. A custom build earns its cost when the platform is the thing in the way: when the checkout cannot do what you sell, when apps and plugins are eating margin, when speed problems cannot be fixed inside the theme, or when you are paying for traffic that the store is not converting.

Can I keep selling on Amazon while you build my own store?

Yes, and for most brands you should. Amazon is a strong place to be found, and a direct store is where you keep the customer, the data and more of the margin. We plan the two to work together: Amazon for discovery, your own store for repeat orders, bundles and email. Our guide to moving beyond Amazon covers what can move across, what has to stay, and the marketplace rules to respect while you do it.

How long does a custom ecommerce build take?

It depends on the size of the catalogue, the number of integrations (payment, shipping, tax, inventory, email) and how many old URLs need mapping. We do not quote a timeline before the research stage, because a number given before we have seen your store and data would be a guess. After the first conversation and a look at your current site, we give you a staged plan with each step laid out, so you know what happens when.

Who owns the store once it is built?

This should be settled in writing before any work starts, and with us it is part of the first conversation: who holds the domain, the hosting account, the code and the data. Your products, customers and orders sit in a database rather than inside a rented platform account, which is much of the reason to build custom in the first place. Ask us to walk you through the handover terms for your project before you commit to anything.

Next step

Ask yours. The form reaches the people who would be doing the work.
