Migrate Your Ecommerce Site from Shopify to a Store Built for You

For Shopify store owners who have hit the ceiling of the theme, the checkout or the app bill. We give Shopify its due, explain the limits you actually run into, and move you onto a store built for your business with every product and collection URL redirected.

“It's a Big Internet. You've Got To Stand Out.”

Plan your Shopify migration

No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.

  • Your checkout, your rules. The steps, fields and offers in your checkout follow your products instead of your plan level.
  • URLs that say what they sell. Your site structure is no longer decided by fixed /collections/ and /products/ folders.
  • Fewer monthly apps. Features you rent one subscription at a time become part of the store itself.

Start here.

Shopify is the default answer for a new online store, and for good reasons. But stores that grow on it tend to hit the same limits: a checkout they cannot change, a structure they cannot control and an app bill that grows every month. Shopify deserves credit first. After that we set out those limits plainly and explain how to migrate ecommerce site from Shopify setups to a store built for your business without giving up your rankings.

What Shopify does very well

Shopify takes the hard, boring parts of running a store off your hands. Hosting, security patches, card data compliance and uptime are handled for you, and you can go from idea to taking orders in an afternoon. For a new brand testing a product, that speed matters more than anything on this page.

Its checkout is fast and trusted, and its accelerated payment button remembers shoppers across thousands of stores, which helps first-time buyers finish. The admin is easy for staff to learn, the app store covers almost any feature, and there are plenty of developers who know the platform.

It also connects to marketplaces, social shops and its own point-of-sale system, so a brand selling at markets, in a shop and online can run stock from one place. If that is how your business works today, it is a real benefit, and it should be weighed honestly against everything below.

So the case for leaving rests on something other than quality. Shopify is built for every store at once, and a growing store eventually needs things most stores do not.

Themes and Liquid: editing somebody else's framework

Shopify themes are written in Liquid, Shopify's own template language, and arranged in sections and blocks that the theme author defined. You can rearrange what the theme allows and edit its code, but the structure underneath stays Shopify's. Pages are assembled from the data the platform exposes, in the order the theme was designed for.

That is fine until your product does not fit the mould. A configurator with dependent options, a product that is really three products sold together, trade pricing for some customers, or a size guide that changes by region all end up as workarounds: hidden products, app widgets, or custom code that the next theme update may overwrite.

Every redesign starts from someone else's theme

Most Shopify redesigns are a switch to a different theme plus customisation. The customisation does not travel with you to the next theme, so stores pay for the same changes more than once. A store built for you starts from your products instead.

Ask us

tell us the product or feature your theme has never handled properly, and we will tell you how it would work when the store is built around it.

The checkout belongs to Shopify

The checkout is where a store makes or loses its money, and on Shopify it is the part you control least. Branding, a few settings and approved extensions are open to everyone. Deeper changes to the checkout steps themselves are reserved for Shopify's top enterprise plan, so on lower plans the checkout works the way Shopify decides.

Payments on top of payments

Shopify also adds a transaction fee on top of card processing when you do not use its own payment gateway. If your business needs a particular processor, for a better rate, a trade account or a market Shopify Payments does not serve, you pay for the platform's preference on every order. The exact rate depends on your plan, so check your own billing before you compare.

On a store built for you, the checkout steps, fields, offers and payment provider are your decisions. Whether a change helps is then a question for testing, which is what our conversion rate optimization service is for.

Next step

send us a screen recording of your checkout on a phone and the one change you would make, and we will tell you whether your plan allows it.

The app bill and what it does to speed

Shopify keeps its core lean and leaves features to apps: reviews, subscriptions, bundles, upsells, filters, wishlists, loyalty, translations, product options. Most are monthly subscriptions, so a store's real running cost is the plan plus every app, every month, for as long as you trade. Add them up for a year and the total often surprises owners.

Each app adds weight

Many apps load their own scripts and styles on every page, whether or not that page uses the feature. Uninstalling an app does not always remove the code it added to your theme, so stores carry leftovers from apps they stopped using years ago. Speed problems on Shopify stores are very often app problems, and they cannot be fixed by the platform's fast hosting.

Your store depends on vendors you do not control

If an app changes its pricing, is bought by a competitor, or shuts down, the feature goes with it. A store built for you includes the features you depend on, so a change at an app vendor no longer puts part of your store at risk.

send us your list of installed apps and we will mark which ones a custom store would replace and which you would still want to keep.

/collections/ and /products/: a URL structure you cannot change

Every Shopify store uses the same fixed folders: /products/ for products, /collections/ for categories, /pages/ for pages and /blogs/ for posts. You cannot remove them or nest products under their category in the URL. A product about walking boots lives at /products/walking-boots, never at /hiking/boots/walking-boots.

What that means for SEO

Shopify handles the basics, so this is a limit rather than a disaster, but you do lose some control. Products also answer at a second address inside each collection, such as /collections/boots/products/walking-boots. Shopify points search engines at the plain product URL with a canonical tag, yet many themes link internally to the collection version, so search engines crawl duplicate addresses and your internal links point at pages you have asked them to ignore.

Category pages are also harder to build out as real landing pages with their own content and sub-categories. For a store that wins on category searches, that structure is a ceiling, and it is one of the first things our ecommerce SEO work looks at.

Talk to us

ask us to crawl your store and count how many duplicate collection-product URLs search engines are finding.

Your data, their export

Shopify lets you export products, customers and orders as spreadsheets, which is more than some platforms offer. But an export built for reporting falls well short of a store you can pick up and move.

  • Passwords never move. No platform hands over customer passwords, so returning customers set a new one.
  • Reviews live in apps. Their export depends on which review app you used.
  • Subscriptions and saved cards sit with the subscription app and the payment provider, and need their own transfer.
  • Custom product data held in extra fields and in app databases often needs a separate extraction.
  • Theme work does not export at all; it belongs to the theme.

On a store built for you, the database holds your products, customers, orders and reviews together. Ad platforms read the same clean product feed, which is why our ecommerce ads management team plans feed and tracking changes as part of every migration.

Ask us

ask for a data audit of your Shopify store before you decide; it tells you exactly what a move would carry and what it would leave.

What you control once the store is your own

Leaving Shopify should mean more than swapping one platform's rules for another's. The aim is a store whose rules you set. On a custom store, the things this page has described as limits become decisions you make.

  • The checkout is designed for your products. Fields, steps, upsells, delivery options and payment providers are chosen for how your customers buy, then tested.
  • Features are built in. Reviews, bundles, options and subscriptions are part of the store instead of rented apps, so the monthly app list shrinks and so does the code loading on every page.
  • Pages load only what they use. The store carries no leftover scripts or app widgets on pages that do not need them, and the product page is built to be quick on a phone.
  • The URL structure is yours. Categories can nest, product paths can carry the category, and category pages can be built out as real landing pages.
  • Your data lives in one place. Products, customers, orders and reviews sit together in a database you control, ready for reporting, email and ad feeds.

The trade is that hosting and maintenance become something you plan for rather than something a monthly plan covers. We set that out before any work starts, so you compare like with like.

Next step

ask us for a side-by-side of your current Shopify costs and limits against what the same store would look like built for you.

How we migrate a Shopify store without losing rankings

Shopify's fixed folders make the URL map predictable, which works in your favour. The risk is in the details: collection-scoped product URLs, old redirects already in the store, and pages that only exist because an app created them. Our sequence runs like this.

  • URL map. We crawl the store and pull every product, collection, page, blog post and collection-product URL, plus the redirects Shopify already holds from your own past changes, so nothing earned is lost.
  • 301 redirects. Every old URL gets a permanent redirect to its closest new page, one to one wherever possible, with the collection-scoped duplicates pointed at the right product.
  • Data export. Products with variants and images, customers with consent status, full order history, reviews from your review app, and a plan for subscriptions agreed with your payment provider.
  • Test index. The complete new store on a private, unindexed address with every page listed, checked page by page against the URL map, structured data and product feed.
  • Parallel run. Shopify keeps trading while the new store is tested with real products, test-mode payments and your real shipping rules.
  • Cutover. Final orders and customers are synced, the domain is pointed at the new store, redirects go live, feeds and ad tracking are switched, and search engines are notified. We then watch crawl reports, rankings and orders daily until they settle.

The full design and build process is on our custom ecommerce website design hub. The same migration plan, adapted to each platform, covers stores coming off WooCommerce, shops moving on from Squarespace, and brands opening a direct store alongside Amazon.

The questions that come up every time.

Is Shopify bad for SEO?

No, and anyone who says so is overselling. Shopify handles the basics well: editable titles and descriptions, automatic sitemaps, canonical tags and secure hosting. The limits are about control. You cannot remove the /products/ and /collections/ folders from your URLs, products are reachable at more than one address, and deeper changes depend on what your theme and apps allow. Many stores rank well on Shopify. The question is whether those limits are now holding your particular store back.

Will I lose my rankings if I move off Shopify?

Not if the URL map is done properly. Shopify's fixed folders actually make the map easier, because every product, collection, page and blog post follows a predictable pattern. We crawl the store, list every live URL including the collection-scoped product addresses, and give each one a 301 redirect to its closest new page. The new store is checked on a private test index first, and we watch rankings and crawl reports closely after cutover.

Can I take my customers and their passwords with me?

Customer records export from Shopify, including names, emails, addresses and marketing consent. Passwords do not: no platform hands over customers' passwords, so we plan a simple reset step where returning customers set a new one the first time they sign in, with a clear email explaining why. Order history exports too, and we import it so customers can still see what they bought.

What happens to my product reviews?

Shopify does not hold reviews itself; they live in whichever review app you installed. Most review apps offer an export of reviews with product identifiers, ratings, names and dates, and we import those onto the matching products in the new store and into the product's structured data. We check your review app's export early in the project, because that is the step most likely to need extra work.

What about my subscriptions and saved cards?

Subscription apps and the payment provider hold those details, not your theme. Moving active subscriptions without asking customers to re-enter cards depends on whether the payment provider supports transferring the stored payment details to your new setup, and that is arranged with the provider directly. We map this out at the start, because a subscription business cannot afford to find out at cutover.

Do I need to leave Shopify to fix my conversion rate?

Not always. Plenty of conversion problems can be fixed inside a Shopify theme: product page layout, images, copy, speed from app clean-up, and navigation. We would rather you fix those first if they are the real problem. A migration makes sense when the limits are in the platform itself, in the checkout you cannot change, the structure you cannot control, or the app costs that keep rising.
