Local Business Backlinks (Google Maps Links) That Feed the Map Pack

For shops, restaurants, clinics, trades, offices and every business that wants to be found on the map by people nearby. We build the citations, local links and profile signals that tell Google your business is real and nearby, and worth showing.

“The best local links come from your own town: the press, the chamber, the teams you sponsor and the shops next door.”

No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.

  • Built for the map pack. Google says prominence, which includes links and directories, is part of how it ranks local results.
  • Citations done properly. Your name, address and phone the same everywhere, on the directories that matter.
  • Links from your own town. Local press, chambers, sponsorships and neighbours give you links a competitor cannot simply buy.

For a local business, the map pack is often the first and last thing a customer sees. The best way to build "Local Business Backlinks (Google Maps Links), but better yet, links for your local business" is to contact us directly. Links and citations both feed the map, and only some of them are worth having.

Google tells you in plain words that links count locally

Google's own help page on local ranking names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher, and you cannot change it. Prominence is how well known your business is, and Google says it draws on information from across the web, including links, articles and directories, as well as your reviews.

That is the clearest statement you will find from any search engine that links still matter, whatever the year. They are not the only factor: a complete profile, the right categories and steady reviews count too. But a local business with no citations and no local links will not show in the map pack beyond its own doorstep, will not hold a spot against established competitors, and will be drowned out by the businesses that have been building prominence for years. AI search follows the same pattern when someone asks for a recommendation nearby: it leans on businesses the web already knows about.

What "Google Maps links" really means

The phrase covers several different things, and only some of them move rankings.

Link What it does Worth building?
Citations in directories Confirm your name, address, phone and category Yes, on the directories that matter
Local links to your website Build the prominence Google describes Yes, the strongest local signal you control
The website link on your Business Profile Sends map visitors to the right page Yes, point it carefully
A map embedded on your own contact page Helps visitors find you Yes, for customers rather than rankings
Bulk links or embeds pointed at your Maps URL Little, and looks manufactured No

The profile's website link is easy to get wrong. A single-location business usually points it at the homepage; a business with several locations should point each profile at its own location page, and that page should have links of its own rather than borrowing strength from the homepage.

Citations: the same details, everywhere that matters

Citations are listings of your business name, address and phone on other sites. They confirm to Google that the business on your profile is real and where it says it is. Our local program has always covered the directories people actually use, such as Yelp, Yellow Pages, White Pages, Foursquare and Manta, along with the directories specific to your trade.

  • Consistency first. The same name, address and phone, written the same way, on every listing. Old addresses and former phone numbers are the most common cause of confusion.
  • Trusted directories before volume. A smaller set of trusted, relevant directories beats a mass submission to low-quality ones.
  • Duplicates removed. Two listings for the same business split reviews and signals, so we find and merge or remove them.
  • Kept current. When you move, change hours or add a service, the listings follow.

As our local SEO company page has explained for years, some directories restrict submissions to verified agencies to cut spam, which is part of why owners find this work slow on their own.

Next step

ask us for a citation check, and we will list where your details are wrong, missing or duplicated.

Local links a competitor cannot buy

The links that build real prominence come from your own area. They are slow to earn, which is exactly why they are hard for a competitor to copy. Our relationships with editors, bloggers, creators and community sites matter here, and for a local business the most valuable of them are a short drive away.

  • Local news. Openings, expansions, community work and expert comment on local issues.
  • Chambers of commerce and business groups. Member directories and event pages.
  • Sponsorships. Youth sports teams, charity events and festivals, which usually list sponsors with a link.
  • Neighbouring businesses. Suppliers, partners and complementary shops that recommend each other.
  • Local bloggers and creators. Food, family and neighbourhood writers who cover places people go.
  • Community organisations. Charities, clubs and associations you support or work with.

Businesses in particular trades have extra local options. Contractors should read our home improvement links page, agents real estate backlinks, and restaurants and cafes our page on links for food sites.

The local shortcuts that get profiles suspended

Local search has its own set of tricks, and Google's guidelines for Business Profiles rule out most of them. A suspension costs you more than a ranking, because a suspended profile disappears from the map altogether.

  • Keywords stuffed into the business name. Your profile should use your real business name, not your name plus a list of services and towns.
  • Fake or virtual addresses. A location must be a real place where you meet customers, or you should list as a service-area business and hide the address.
  • Fake, bought or incentivised reviews. They break the rules, and they are increasingly detected and removed.
  • Spam citations and map embed schemes. Listings and embeds made for volume add nothing and leave a footprint.

The goal is a profile sturdy enough to ride out Google's updates and a hostile competitor's tactics, including the fake edits and spam reviews some competitors use. Watching your profile for unwanted changes is part of the work, and reviews connect to our online reputation management service.

How local links fit our local program

Local link building sits inside the five-part program we have published on our local SEO page for years: your Google map listings, your directory listings, your Facebook business page, your reputation and reviews, and a website worth sending people to. Links and citations feed the first two directly and support the rest.

A campaign starts with a check of your profile, citations and existing links, then a plan that fixes inconsistencies first, adds the directories that matter, and builds local links over time through our network of authors and outlets. Local business is one of many niches in our backlink building services; the full list is on our backlinks building service page, and the way we shape a plan to your budget is explained by our work as a backlink company. Service businesses that sell beyond one town should also see links for service based websites. When you are ready, tell us where your customers are and we will map out where to start.

The questions that come up every time.

What are Google Maps links?

People use the phrase for a few different things. The most important is the set of links and mentions around your business that build its prominence: citations in directories, links from local news, organisations and other businesses, and links to the page your Business Profile points at. It also covers the website link on the profile itself and links to your listing, such as a map embedded on your contact page. The first group affects ranking most; the others help people find you and leave reviews.

Do backlinks really affect map pack rankings?

Google says local results are ranked mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and it describes prominence as including what it knows about a business from across the web, such as links, articles and directories. So yes, links are part of it, alongside your profile's completeness, your categories, your reviews and how close the searcher is. You cannot change distance. Links and citations are among the few levers you can pull to compete beyond the next street.

Can I build citations myself?

You can, and for a few major directories many owners do. The difficulty is doing it consistently across many sites, keeping details correct when something changes, and cleaning up old or duplicate listings. Some directories also limit or verify submissions to cut down on spam, which can make it slow for an owner working alone. Our local program has handled directory listings for years for exactly that reason.

Should I buy links to my Google Maps listing URL?

No. Packages that point large numbers of links at a Maps listing URL, or embed your map on unrelated sites, add little and look manufactured. What helps the map pack is genuine prominence: consistent citations, links from real local sources to your website, and steady reviews. Linking to your listing from your own site, your emails and your partners is useful for directions and reviews, which is a reason to do it, but it is not a ranking shortcut.

How is this different from your service based websites page?

This page is about the map pack and the local signals that feed it: your Business Profile, citations, and links from your own area. The service based websites page covers the wider set of links a service business can earn, including trade press, suppliers, associations and national coverage. A local plumber or dentist usually needs both, and we plan them together so the profile, the website and the links all point the same way.
