Backlinks for Home Improvement Sites, From the Map Pack to the DIY Guide

For contractors, remodelers, roofers, installers, home improvement retailers and DIY publishers. We build the local and trade links that put a contractor in the map results, and the editorial links that put a home improvement guide on page one.

“A contractor's link profile should hold up through Google updates and against rivals who post spam or fake reviews.”

No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.

  • Local signals first for contractors. Google Business Profile, consistent citations and links from your own town come before any national campaign.
  • Trade links that prove you are real. Suppliers, manufacturers, licensing bodies and local associations link to contractors who actually do the work.
  • Editorial links for publishers. DIY and home outlets with real readers, pointed at the project guides worth ranking.

Start here.

The best way to build "backlinks for Home Improvement Sites, but better yet, your home improvement site" is to contact us directly. Home improvement covers two very different kinds of site, the local contractor and the national publisher, and the links that help one can do nothing for the other. We start by working out which one you are.

02Backlinks Building Service

Two kinds of home improvement site, two link strategies

A roofer in one county and a DIY publisher read across the country both sit in home improvement, but search treats them differently. The roofer is competing in the map results for searches with a town attached. The publisher is competing for "how to" searches against big media brands and retailers.

Contractors and installers Publishers, retailers and DIY brands
Where they win Map results and local organic results National organic results and AI answers
What search rewards Proximity, relevance, prominence, reviews Experience, depth, original photographs
Strongest links Local organisations, suppliers, manufacturers, citations Home and DIY writers, communities, editorial features
Biggest risk Fake citations, lead marketplaces, competitor sabotage Guest post farms, thin affiliate content

Many businesses sit in both columns: a remodeler with a strong blog, or a retailer with installation crews. The plan then has two tracks running side by side.

Whichever column you are in, the date does not change the role of links. Without a few really good ones, a home improvement site sits underneath the marketplaces and national brands, however good its work. They are not the only factor, but search engines and AI search alike still treat them as a sign that a site deserves a look.

For contractors, the map pack runs on links and listings

When a homeowner searches for a trade near them, the map results usually come first. Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence is built from what the rest of the web says about you: links, citations, reviews and mentions.

Our local SEO company page has always made the point that your business information must match everywhere it appears. For link building, that means the foundation is consistent citations in the core local directories, with your name, address and phone written exactly as on your Google Business Profile. On top of that, the links that move contractors are local and trade links:

  • Suppliers and distributors you buy from, many of which list trade customers.
  • Manufacturer installer locators for the windows, roofing, flooring or systems you are certified to install.
  • Licensing and trade associations, whose member directories are trusted and relevant.
  • Chambers of commerce and business groups in your service area.
  • Local news and community sites, which cover projects, sponsorships and seasonal advice.
  • Real estate agents and property managers who refer work, covered further on our real estate backlinks page.

Each of those links says the same thing: this business is real, it works here, and other local businesses vouch for it. Our page on Google Maps links for local businesses goes deeper on citations and map signals for every kind of local trade.

Contractor directories: lead sellers versus link sources

Homeowners use contractor directories and lead marketplaces, and many of those platforms rank above the contractors they list, sometimes for the contractor's own name. That is the situation our local SEO work has warned about for years: being at the mercy of directories that own your online business profile.

Treat them for what they are: a marketplace is somewhere to get leads, and your link building has to happen elsewhere. If its leads pay, keep the listing complete and consistent. But most marketplace links are nofollow, and the authority they build belongs to the platform. Your own site needs its own links so that it can outrank them for your name and your town. While those rankings grow, our pay per lead program for home services is one way to keep the phone ringing.

Reviews belong here too, and they should only ever be real reviews from real customers on the platforms homeowners read. Bought or invented reviews are a policy breach and a liability, and we will not touch them.

Next step

ask us to search your company name and trade the way a homeowner would, and we will show you who owns those results today.

For DIY publishers and retailers, the guide is the link magnet

National home improvement sites compete with retailers, magazines and video platforms, and their results reward experience: someone who has actually tiled the bathroom or rebuilt the deck. The pages that earn links are the ones only a practitioner could write.

  • Step by step project guides with your own photographs at every stage.
  • Tool and material comparisons based on real use rather than rewritten product listings.
  • Seasonal maintenance checklists that local news and community sites like to share.
  • Honest cost explainers that walk through what drives the price of a job, without inventing averages.
  • Problem and fix pages for the leaks, cracks and failures people search for in a hurry.

Get Found places these with home and DIY writers, niche based blog owners and community sites through our network of authors and outlets. Building products manufacturers have their own overlap with the trade press described on our industrial backlinks page.

Ask us

ask which of your guides is closest to earning links, and which outlets would want to cite it.

Risks that are specific to home improvement

Home improvement is a lucrative local market, and that attracts shortcuts:

Citation and directory networks that sell hundreds of listings on sites nobody visits. Home and garden guest post farms that publish anything for a fee, beside casino and crypto links. City pages that swap a town name into the same text, which search engines treat as doorway pages. And malicious competitor action: spam links pointed at your site and fake reviews posted against you.

We keep contractors off spammy sites and off sites unrelated to their trade. We monitor new links to your site, document attacks, and prepare a disavow file where one is warranted. A profile built on real local relationships is the one that comes through Google's updates and a rival's sabotage intact.

How Get Found builds a home improvement link profile

For contractors, we begin with citations and your Google Business Profile, then claim supplier, manufacturer and association links, then add local editorial links. For publishers and retailers, we audit your guides, choose the pages worth promoting, and place them with outlets whose readers fix and build things. For businesses in both columns, we run both tracks.

Homeowners compare quotes, and you can compare us the same way: the backlink building services category page explains what we do, our backlink company page shows how a plan is fitted to what you can spend, and the backlinks building service covers the other trades and markets. Then tell us about your trade and your town, and we will tell you which links we would go after first.

The questions that come up every time.

Do contractors need backlinks if they already have a Google Business Profile?

The profile is the start, not the finish. The map results weigh how relevant, how close and how prominent a business is, and prominence draws on links, citations and reviews across the web. Two contractors with equally complete profiles are separated by what the rest of the web says about them. Backlinks are not the only factor, but they are still a major indicator search engines use to decide who gets shown.

Which directories matter most for home improvement businesses?

The core local directories, such as Yelp, Yellow Pages and the main map and data providers, plus the contractor directories homeowners in your area actually use, your trade association's member list and the locators of brands you install. Each listing should match your Google Business Profile exactly. Directories that list every trade nationally and send no enquiries are rarely worth paying for.

Are lead generation marketplaces good or bad for my links?

They are mostly a separate thing. A marketplace profile can send leads, but the links on it are often nofollow, and the marketplace page frequently outranks your own site for your own name. Use them if the leads pay, keep your listing consistent, and build your own site's links so that you are not at the mercy of a platform you do not control.

What is negative SEO, and does it happen to contractors?

It is a competitor pointing spammy links at your site or posting fake reviews to damage your standing. It happens more in local trades than in most niches because the map results are worth so much. Search engines ignore most junk links, but a profile with few real links is more exposed. Monitoring, a disavow file where it is warranted and a strong base of genuine local links are the defence.

How do home improvement blogs and retailers earn links?

By publishing project guides people follow: step by step instructions with real photographs, tool and material comparisons, seasonal maintenance checklists and honest explanations of what drives the cost of a job. DIY communities, home and garden writers and local news link to these pages. The links then pass strength to category and product pages through internal links.

Ask yours. The form reaches the people who would be doing the work.
