Portuguese Backlinks for Sites That Sell in Portugal

For businesses with a European Portuguese site that should rank in Portugal instead of getting lost behind Brazilian pages. We place links on Portuguese sites with real readers, in articles written by native writers from Portugal.

“In Portugal, Portuguese links are how Google tells a Lisbon page from a Brazilian one.”

No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.

  • Portugal, not Brazil. European Portuguese articles on Portuguese sites, pointed at your pt-PT pages.
  • From Lisbon to the islands. National press plus the regional papers that carry real weight outside the capital.
  • Diaspora and Lusophone reach. Portuguese communities abroad and the African markets that follow Portugal's standard.

The best way to build "Portuguese backlinks, but better yet, backlinks for your Portuguese-language site in Portugal" is to contact us directly. Our Portugal work centres on the .pt domain, European Portuguese and the outlets read in Lisbon, Porto and the islands. Brazil is a separate market with its own page, and Portuguese sites that treat the two as one tend to lose rankings in Portugal.

Portugal's search results are crowded with Brazil

Far more people speak Portuguese in Brazil than in Portugal, and the Portuguese-language web reflects that. When someone in Portugal searches, Google often has many more Brazilian pages to choose from than Portuguese ones. Local signals are how Google works out which pages belong to Portugal, and links from Portuguese sites are among the strongest of them.

Without them, a Portuguese page can lose to a Brazilian page that answers a slightly different question in a different variety of the language, simply because the Brazilian page has more links behind it. Readers in Portugal then land on prices in reais, Brazilian shipping terms and vocabulary that is not theirs, and leave.

European Portuguese is not Brazilian with a different accent

A reader in Portugal knows within a sentence whether a text was written for them. Vocabulary differs: telemóvel, not celular; autocarro, not ônibus; pequeno-almoço, not café da manhã; ecrã, not tela. Grammar differs too, in the use of tu, in where pronouns sit, and in the continuous tense, where Portugal says estou a fazer.

That matters for links in two ways. An article in Brazilian Portuguese looks out of place on a Portuguese site, and good Portuguese editors will not publish it. And anchors in Brazilian vocabulary match Brazilian searches rather than the words people type in Portugal. Every article we place in Portugal is written by a native writer from Portugal.

send us your Portuguese pages and we will tell you whether they read as written for Portugal or for Brazil.

The .pt domain, hreflang and the country signals

A .pt domain tells Google the site is for Portugal. A .com with a /pt-pt/ folder can do the same, with hreflang set to pt-PT. What fails is a single "pt" version meant for both countries: Google then has to choose, and the much larger Brazilian audience usually takes the bigger share of the visibility.

If you serve both markets, build two versions, pt-PT and pt-BR, each with hreflang pointing at the other, and build links to each from its own country. Links from Portuguese sites go to the Portugal version. Brazilian links belong to the Brazil version, which is covered on our Brazil backlinks page.

Next step

if your site has one Portuguese version for two countries, we will show you what splitting it would involve before any links are built.

Why links still decide rankings in Portugal

Every year someone claims links matter less, and rankings in Portugal keep saying otherwise. Links are not the only factor: a page still needs to answer the search well, load fast and be built cleanly. But a link from a trusted Portuguese site remains one of the main signals that a page deserves to be considered at all, and without good links a Portuguese site does not show up, does not rank, and sits beneath competitors who have them.

AI search follows the same sources. When Google's AI Overviews or ChatGPT answer a question in European Portuguese, they cite pages the Portuguese web already trusts. A page no Portuguese site has linked to is rarely among them.

The Portuguese outlets that move rankings

Our Portuguese placements come through press contacts, niche bloggers, influencers and sites with a real readership in Portugal. They fall into a handful of groups.

  • National newspapers and news sites, read across the country, where a story or contributed article carries weight.
  • Regional and local press, which is strong in Portugal. The North, the Centre, the Alentejo, the Algarve, Madeira and the Azores each have their own papers and portals, and they matter for any business with a local presence.
  • Niche blogs on travel, food and wine, property, parenting, tech, personal finance and lifestyle.
  • Business associations and directories, which confirm what you do and where.
  • Creators and influencers whose channels send Portuguese readers to search for you by name.

Spam sites and sites unrelated to your business are excluded, and so are Brazilian link farms sold as Portuguese links because they share a language name.

Beyond Portugal: the diaspora and Lusophone Africa

Portuguese communities abroad are large and stay close to home: in France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Many still search in European Portuguese, for services in Portugal, from property to banking to flights home, and for Portuguese products where they live. Diaspora newspapers, community associations and Portuguese-language media abroad have a direct line to that audience. France is home to one of the largest of those communities, and our French backlinks page covers the French-language side of the same market.

Portuguese is also the official language of Angola, Mozambique, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe, where the written standard broadly follows Portugal's rather than Brazil's. Those markets have their own country domains, such as .ao and .mz, and their own outlets, so they are a separate plan we scope with you.

Ask us

if part of your audience is the Portuguese diaspora, tell us where they live and we will plan links in the communities they read.

How we build Portuguese links for you

We begin with an audit: your Portuguese pages, whether they are written for Portugal, your hreflang, the links you have and the competitors above you. From that comes a plan by outlet type and target page. Native writers from Portugal produce the articles, we place them, and we check every live link points at the right pt-PT URL.

Working with Get Found directly gives you our writers from Portugal and the outlets they publish in, since link building is our main line of work. We want your Portuguese profile to come through Google's updates and any competitor's sabotage intact. Network size, price per link, turnaround and reporting are agreed when we talk.

Portuguese links are one part of our backlink building services. The questions that come up every time.

Are Brazilian backlinks good for a site in Portugal?

Not for ranking in Portugal. A link from a Brazilian site tells Google that Brazilian readers find your page relevant, which helps a Brazil-facing page. For a site selling to Portugal you want links from Portuguese sites, in European Portuguese, pointed at your pt-PT pages. Some link sellers offer Brazilian placements as Portuguese links because the language name is the same. They are a different market with different readers.

Do I need a .pt domain to rank in Portugal?

It helps, because a .pt domain is the clearest country signal there is. A .com with a /pt-pt/ folder, hreflang set to pt-PT and a consistent local presence can also rank well. What fails is a single Portuguese version meant for both Portugal and Brazil, because Google then has to choose an audience for it. Links from Portuguese sites reinforce whichever structure you pick.

Can the same article run in Portugal and Brazil?

It should not. The vocabulary, grammar and references differ enough that a Portuguese reader spots a Brazilian text immediately, and the reverse is just as true. Editors in Portugal expect European Portuguese and decline the rest. Publishing the same text in both countries also creates duplicate content. Each market gets its own article from a native writer of that market.

Do backlinks still matter for Portuguese sites?

Yes. Google also looks at content, speed and how well a Portuguese page answers the search, so links are only part of it. But links from trusted Portuguese sites remain one of the main signals that a page deserves to be shown, and they matter more in Portugal than in most markets, because they are how Google separates Portugal's pages from the much larger Brazilian web.

Can you build links for the Portuguese diaspora?

Yes. Portuguese communities in France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada have their own newspapers, associations and community sites, and many people there still search in European Portuguese. A business serving them needs pages targeted to the country they live in and links from those community outlets. We plan that as its own strand of the campaign.

Next step

Ask yours. The form reaches the people who would be doing the work.
