Backlinks for Marijuana Sites When Paid Ads Are Off the Table

For dispensaries, delivery services, cannabis brands, grow shops and cannabis publishers. Most paid advertising is closed to you, so links from outlets that cover cannabis on purpose carry more of the load, and we build them with authors and editors who accept the topic.

“Cannabis links come from outlets that cover the plant on purpose, and spammy or unrelated sites are left out.”

No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.

  • Outlets that say yes. Cannabis trade press, niche based blog owners and local outlets that cover the plant on purpose. Sites that will publish anything for anyone are left out.
  • Earned links fill the ad gap. With Google and Meta ads largely unavailable for cannabis, earned links do more of the work of getting you seen.
  • Built around state rules. Every placement respects the advertising rules where you are licensed, starting with who the readers are.

Start here.

Cannabis is legal to sell in a lot of places and still awkward to promote almost everywhere. The best way to build "backlinks for Marijuana Sites, but better yet, your cannabis site" is to contact us directly, because the right plan depends on what you sell, where you hold a licence and which outlets will even take the call. Cannabis has its own set of publishers, and they work differently from the mainstream web.

02Backlinks Building Service

Half the internet says no to cannabis, and that shapes everything

Most link building advice assumes every publisher is a possible yes. In cannabis that assumption breaks on day one. Plenty of mainstream sites, sponsored-content desks and guest-post networks refuse the topic outright, and some press release services put cannabis news through extra review or decline it.

Paid media is narrower still. Google Ads does not allow the promotion of recreational cannabis, and its openings for hemp-derived CBD are limited, certified and confined to a few US markets. Meta's ad rules block the sale of cannabis. Payment processors, app stores and email platforms each draw their own lines. In the US you also sit in the gap between state law and federal law, and in Canada the Cannabis Act restricts promotion tightly.

As a result, a cannabis business cannot rent its visibility the way a shoe brand can, so organic search and the links behind it carry a bigger share of the load. When ads are closed, the sites that rank are the ones other sites vouch for.

  • Refusals are information. An outlet that says no to cannabis is telling you its readers were never your buyers.
  • Acceptance is not endorsement. A site that will publish any topic for a fee, cannabis included, is usually a site we avoid.
  • Policies move. We recheck outlet and platform positions before each campaign, because they change.

The cannabis outlets that still pass real value

Cannabis has also built its own press, and much of it has real readers. Get Found works with PR outlets, niche blog owners, influencers and cannabis sites with real readers, and in this niche those fall into six groups.

Outlet type Why the link matters What to watch
Cannabis trade and industry news Read by operators, investors and regulators; a strong topical match Paid "features" with no editorial standard
Strain, product and dispensary directories Where consumers compare; a good listing sends buyers Thin profiles on directories that list anyone
City magazines and alt-weeklies Local relevance for dispensaries and delivery Coverage tied to news, not evergreen pages
Grow, hemp and agriculture blogs Deep relevance for cultivation and supplies Seed-bank spam and affiliate farms
Medical cannabis patient communities Trust, and the questions patients really ask Strict limits on health claims
Podcasts and creators Reach with the people who buy Platform rules limit what they can say

Ancillary businesses (packaging, compliance software, lighting, security, testing labs) have a second set of outlets: business and technology publications that cover the industry without touching the plant. A compliance software company should not be chasing the same links as a dispensary.

Ask us

send us your site and three competitors, and we will map which of these outlet types already link to them and which are open to you.

What cannabis search results reward

Search engines treat cannabis carefully. Anything touching health, dosing or legality sits close to the topics Google calls Your Money or Your Life, where it looks harder for expertise and trust. AI search tools behave the same way: when an AI answer explains whether something is legal in a state, or how a product affects people, it leans on sources other trusted sources cite.

That gives you a clear list of pages worth earning links to:

  • State-by-state legality and purchase guides. Kept current, dated and sourced, these attract links from news and community sites every time a law changes.
  • Education written or reviewed by qualified people. Terpenes, extraction methods, how to read a lab result. Reviewed content earns links that a menu page will not.
  • A page for each licensed store. Paired with a Google Business Profile, these win the map searches that drive most dispensary visits. Our guide to Google Maps and local business links covers the citation side.
  • Original data. Price trends across your menu, lab-test summaries or customer surveys you run yourself give journalists something to quote.

A product category page with nothing on it but products will rarely earn a link by itself. Build the informational page, earn the links to it, and pass that authority to the menu with internal links.

Anchor text and relevance when the topic is sensitive

Anchor text in cannabis gets more scrutiny than in most niches, from search engines and from the editors who place the link. Exact-match anchors built on buying phrases look manipulative anywhere; around a controlled substance they look worse, and they can get an article pulled.

  • Brand and natural anchors first. Your business name, your domain and plain descriptive phrases should make up most of a healthy profile.
  • Educational anchors point at educational pages. A link that reads "how to read a cannabis lab report" should land on exactly that.
  • No shipping promises in anchors. Moving THC products across state lines is not legal, and anchors that suggest it alarm publishers and regulators.
  • Adult readerships only. Placements go on outlets whose audience is adult, which is what most state advertising rules expect.

Relevance is the other half. A link from a gardening site to a grow-supply store makes sense to a reader. A link from a random travel blog to a dispensary does not, and a profile full of irrelevant links is exactly what a spam update or a hostile competitor's report is built to find. Your profile has to hold up through Google's updates and any competitor's complaint, and in cannabis, competitors do report each other.

Next step

we will audit your current anchors and flag the ones that would worry an editor or a reviewer before they turn into a problem.

Why links still decide which cannabis sites get seen

Some people will tell you links stopped mattering years ago. They are not the only factor: content, technical health and local signals all count. But without some really good backlinks, a cannabis site will not show up for the searches that matter and will be drowned out by competitors who have them. That was true when the first states legalized, and it is true now, whatever the date on the calendar.

Links remain one of the strongest hints a search engine has that a site deserves to be looked at in the first place, and AI search tools lean on the same signal when they choose which sources to quote. For a business shut out of most advertising, that hint is worth even more.

if competitors with fewer stores and a thinner menu are outranking you, the gap is probably in the links, and we can show you where.

How we build a cannabis link profile

We are a leading provider of Backlink Building Services, and clients reach our network of authors and outlets by working with us directly instead of through a broker. In cannabis that matters more than usual, because the hard part is knowing which editors accept the topic and on what terms; writing the article is the easier job.

  1. Licence and market check. Where you are licensed, what you sell (THC, CBD, hemp, accessories or ancillary services) and which advertising rules apply.
  2. Competitor and gap map. Which cannabis outlets link to the sites outranking you, and which ones you are missing.
  3. Asset selection. The guide, study or location page each link should point at.
  4. Outreach and writing. Authors who know the subject write for outlets that cover it, with claims kept inside what the rules allow.
  5. Checking. Every live link is reviewed for placement, anchor and attributes before it goes in your report.

The strategy is set to your budget rather than the other way round; our backlink company page explains how, and the Backlinks Building Service overview lists every niche and language we cover. If you also sell into wellness, read how we approach health site links, and if your business sits near other restricted topics, the gambling links page deals with a similar wall of refusals.

Ask us

tell us your budget and your markets, and we will say honestly what a cannabis link plan can and cannot do at that level.

What we will not do for a cannabis site

We will not place links on seed-bank spam, private blog networks or sites that publish any topic for a fee. We will not write health claims your product cannot support, and we will not build anchors that imply you deliver where you cannot. We will not promise a ranking or a domain score, because nobody honest can. What we will do is build a profile you can defend, on outlets that chose to cover cannabis, and tell you plainly when a request crosses a line. Every other category is on the backlink building services hub; when you are ready, use the form on this page or send us a message to Contact to Help Build Your Link Profile.

What we would measure for your business.

The lines, opened upALL 6 UNSCORED UNTIL YOUR BUSINESS IS TESTED
How many of the outlets linking to you actually cover cannabis?Topical relevance is the first thing a reviewer or an algorithm checks, and in this niche it is the easiest thing to fake.— / 100
Do your state legality and education pages earn links on their own?Informational pages are what news and community sites cite, and they pass authority on to your menu and location pages.— / 100
Does each licensed location have its own page and a matching Google Business Profile?Dispensary traffic is mostly local, and location pages are where local links and citations should land.— / 100
What share of your anchor text is a buying phrase?Exact-match purchase anchors around a controlled substance look manipulative to editors and to spam systems alike.— / 100
Are any of your links on seed-bank spam, private networks or any-topic sites? Those are the links a spam update or a competitor's complaint finds first, and they can drag good links down with them.— / 100
Do the outlets you appear on have an adult readership? Most state cannabis advertising rules care about the audience, so a placement's readers matter as much as its authority.— / 100
Why there is no example card on this page. A page showing a glowing “A” for an unnamed happy client is a picture, not a measurement. The first grade you see from us will be about your own business.

The questions that come up every time.

Can a dispensary or cannabis brand get backlinks from mainstream sites?

Sometimes, mostly through news. A business press story about your licence, a local paper covering a new store opening or a quote in an article about a law change can all produce links from mainstream outlets. What you will rarely get is a sponsored post on a general lifestyle site, because many of them refuse cannabis. That is fine. The cannabis trade press, local media and topic blogs are more relevant anyway, and relevance is what search engines weigh.

Is it legal to build links to a cannabis website?

Building links is not the legal question. What the linked content says, and to whom, is. State cannabis rules commonly restrict advertising aimed at minors, health claims and anything that suggests illegal sales. We keep anchors and articles inside those lines and place links on outlets with adult readers. For anything specific to your licence, check with your compliance adviser or attorney, because the rules differ by state and country.

Do CBD and hemp sites need a different link strategy from THC sites?

Partly. Hemp-derived CBD has more outlets open to it, including some wellness and natural products publications that will not touch THC. It also attracts far more spam, so the bar for which sites we use is higher. Health claims are the big risk on CBD sites: regulators have warned companies about disease claims, so the pages you build links to need careful wording.

Why not just use a private blog network for a cannabis site?

Because it is the fastest way to lose what you build. Private networks are a known target of Google's spam systems, and cannabis networks are often stuffed with unrelated casino, pharma and replica content. When they get caught, the sites they point to can lose rankings with them. A competitor can also report them. Fewer links from real cannabis outlets will outlast a big batch from a network.

Do backlinks help a dispensary show up in Google Maps?

They help, alongside your Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent listings. Links from local news, city guides and community sites tell Google your store is a real part of the area. Links to the right location page are better than links to the home page, especially when you run several stores. Our local business backlinks page covers the citation side in more detail.
