Dutch Backlinks for the Netherlands and Flanders

For businesses that want Dutch speakers in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp or Ghent to find them. We treat the Netherlands and Flanders as the two audiences they are, earn links on Dutch-language outlets each one reads, and write every article with a native author.

“We exclude poor or spammy websites that have no link to your product or service.”

No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.

  • Netherlands and Flanders, planned apart. The language is shared, but the everyday words, the outlets and the country domains are not.
  • Dutch links for Dutch pages. Readers who speak excellent English still search, compare and buy in Dutch.
  • Native authors from each side of the border. A Flemish editor spots a Netherlands writer in a sentence, and the reverse is true too.

Start here.

Dutch is read in two countries that like to point out their differences. The best way to build "Dutch backlinks, but better yet, backlinks for your Dutch-language site" is to contact us directly. Many Dutch plans have to begin by undoing one common mistake that businesses make when they enter the Dutch market.

The Dutch read English well, and still search in Dutch

Businesses entering the Netherlands often assume they can skip Dutch. Many Dutch people do read English very well, and in some sectors, such as software and higher education, English pages rank fine. But for most things people buy locally, from a kitchen fitter to a health insurance policy, they search in Dutch, read Dutch reviews and trust Dutch sites.

That is where English-only links fall short. A Dutch page whose links all come from English-language sites, with English anchors, gives Google no sign that anyone in the Netherlands or Flanders reads it. A Dutch page cited by Dutch outlets looks local to Google, which is what helps it rank for searches made close to home.

  • Dutch pages earn Dutch links. We point Dutch-language articles at your Dutch pages rather than at your English home page.
  • Dutch anchors. Written the way a Dutch editor would phrase the link in a sentence.
  • Mixed searches considered. Where buyers type English terms inside Dutch queries, common in technology, we reflect that in the keyword plan.

Netherlands and Flanders are separate audiences

The Netherlands uses .nl. Flanders, the Dutch-speaking north of Belgium, sits under .be, a domain it shares with French-speaking Wallonia and Brussels and the small German-speaking community in the east. The written language is the same, but the two readerships are very different.

Spelling is shared, but vocabulary and tone are not. A Fleming calls a mobile phone a gsm, a Dutch reader says mobiel. Flemish writing uses the formal u more readily, and some words are simply regional. Belgian and Dutch readers each notice quickly when an article was written for the other side.

If you sell in both, separate pages with hreflang nl-NL and nl-BE let Google show the right one, and each needs links from its own side: Netherlands outlets for the Dutch page, Flemish outlets for the Belgian one. A .be link from a French-language site helps a Wallonian page, not a Flemish one, so we check the language of every Belgian outlet.

Next step

tell us whether Flanders is part of your market, and we will tell you whether it needs its own page and link plan.

Compound words and the shape of a Dutch keyword

Dutch, like German, writes compound nouns as single words: fietsenwinkel for bicycle shop, autoverzekering for car insurance. Anchors that split these into separate words look translated, and keyword research done in English misses how Dutch buyers actually phrase a search.

Dutch has few accents, but the ones it has matter. The diaeresis in België and ideeën, and the ij, which Dutch treats almost as one letter and capitalises as IJ in names like IJsselmeer, both get mangled by careless content systems. Most Dutch sites write slugs without the diaeresis, which is fine as long as it is done consistently.

Dutch word forms add another layer. Plurals end in -en or -s, the small linking letters inside compounds follow rules many native speakers argue about (pannenkoek, not pannekoek, under the current spelling), and diminutives are everywhere: a huisje, a biertje, a hapje. A keyword plan built from an English list misses those shapes. Our authors write them naturally, and anchors follow suit: some exact, most phrased the way the sentence around them wants.

The same care goes into names. Dutch city and street names often include a prefix or an article, such as 's-Hertogenbosch or Den Haag, and Flemish place names have French equivalents that some sites use instead. We agree one form for your brand, your locations and your products before the first article goes out, so search engines and AI tools can connect every mention to you.

Search engines still read links as trust

People have predicted the end of backlinks for years, and links still count no matter the date. Google in the Netherlands and Belgium weighs content quality, speed and site structure as well, and we look at all of those. But without some really good backlinks, a Dutch page will never pop up in search, will not rank, and ends up drowned out by competitors with stronger profiles.

AI search has not changed that either. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot assemble answers from sources the web already cites. Links remain a major indicator that a site should even be looked at, and a Dutch page that no Dutch site has referenced is unlikely to be quoted in a Dutch answer.

Where Dutch-language links come from

Get Found has a large network of authors and outlets, and every Dutch placement is chosen on relevance. We exclude poor or spammy websites that have no link to your product or service. What we look for:

  • National news and magazines in the Netherlands and in Flanders, each read by its own audience.
  • Regional newspapers and city sites. The Netherlands has a strong regional press, and Flemish provinces and cities have their own news sites.
  • Trade associations and sector portals. Dutch branch organisations and specialist sites with expert readers.
  • Niche blogs. Dutch and Flemish writers on cycling, food, parenting, home improvement, finance, technology and travel.
  • Directories. Dutch and Belgian business listings that confirm your name, location and services.
  • Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean. Dutch is official in Suriname, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, small markets with outlets of their own.

Every article is written by a native author from the outlet's side of the border. That is part of why the relationships hold: we bring editors work their readers want, rather than translated filler.

Our process for Dutch and Flemish links

We decide the markets first, check that your Dutch pages and hreflang are ready to receive links, then map who ranks for your searches and who links to them. We agree topics, match each to an outlet whose readers care, and commission a native author. Get Found has deep relationships with Dutch and Flemish PR outlets, niche blog owners, influencers, and sites with real visitors that pass genuine value, which is how the profile can hold firm through Google updates and against malicious competitors.

All of this is open to you when you work directly with a leading provider of Backlink Building Services. Dutch links are one part of our backlink building services. Read how Get Found matches link building to your budget, or see the full list of languages and niches we build links in. For Wallonia and Brussels, our French backlinks page applies; for the market to the east, see German backlinks for Germany, Austria and Switzerland; and for another northern market with strong English, see Danish link building. When you are ready, contact us about your Dutch site.

The questions that come up every time.

The Dutch speak English. Why not just use English links?

Many Dutch and Flemish people read English very well, but they still search in Dutch for most things they buy locally: a plumber, an insurance policy, a shop that delivers. Google matches Dutch searches to Dutch pages, and Dutch pages are judged partly by Dutch links. English links help your domain, but a Dutch page with no Dutch-language citations looks like a translation nobody local has noticed.

What is the difference between Dutch and Flemish for SEO?

They share one standard written language, governed jointly by the Netherlands and Flanders, but everyday vocabulary and tone differ. A mobile phone is a gsm in Flanders and a mobiel in the Netherlands. Flemish writing tends to be more formal in places. If you sell in both, separate nl-NL and nl-BE pages with their own links usually perform better than one page trying to please both.

Do backlinks still matter for Dutch websites?

Yes. They are not the only factor, since content, speed and structure count too, but they remain a major indicator to Google and to AI search tools that a page deserves to be shown. Dutch results in competitive sectors are dense with established sites, and a new page without Dutch links rarely breaks into them.

Is a .be domain enough to rank in Flanders?

It helps, because Google reads .be as Belgian. But Belgium has three official languages, and .be sites can be Dutch, French or German. A Flemish page also needs Dutch content written for Flemish readers, hreflang set to nl-BE, and links from Flemish news, blogs and directories. The domain points the page at Belgium; the links place it in Flanders.

Who writes the Dutch articles?

Native authors from the market the outlet serves: Netherlands writers for Netherlands outlets, Flemish writers for Flemish ones. Editors on both sides reject translated or mismatched text quickly. Each Dutch or Flemish article has to be worth reading with the link removed, which is why it stays published and the link keeps counting after future updates.
