German Backlinks for Germany, Austria and Switzerland

For businesses selling to German speakers in Berlin, Vienna, Zurich or anywhere in between. We plan links country by country across .de, .at and .ch, commission native authors who write the German each market expects, and place them on outlets German-speaking readers trust.

“Get Found has deep relationships with PR outlets in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, niche blog owners, influencers, and sites with real German-speaking traffic that pass value.”

  • Three countries, three sets of outlets. Germany, Austria and Switzerland share a written language, not a press, a vocabulary or a set of laws.
  • Umlauts and ß handled once, properly. One rule for slugs and anchors, so your keywords are not split across spellings.
  • Trade portals and regional press. The German web is rich in specialist portals and regional news, where relevant links live.

Start here.

German-speaking Europe is three markets that happen to share a written language. The best way to build "German backlinks, but better yet, backlinks for your German-language site" is to contact us directly. We start with the question of which of those markets you are actually in.

Three countries, three country domains, one written language

Germany, Austria and Switzerland all write Standard German, and that is where the similarities start to thin out. Each country has its own press, its own vocabulary and its own domain: .de for Germany, .at for Austria, .ch for Switzerland, plus .li for Liechtenstein. A link from a well-read Austrian site tells Google something about Austria that a link from Hamburg does not.

The vocabulary differs more than outsiders expect. Austrians write Jänner for January, and say Paradeiser for tomatoes and Erdäpfel for potatoes. Swiss German is spoken rather than written, but written Swiss Standard German has its own words too, such as Velo for bicycle, and it never uses ß, writing ss instead. Readers notice within a sentence when a text was written for a different country.

  • Pick the countries first. Separate pages with hreflang de-DE, de-AT and de-CH when your offer, prices or terms differ.
  • Build links per country. Austrian outlets for the Austrian page, Swiss outlets for the Swiss one.
  • Remember Switzerland is multilingual. The .ch domain also carries French and Italian sites, so a Swiss link is judged by its language and readers, not its ending.

Umlauts and ß in keywords, anchors and URLs

German has four letters that cause trouble online: ä, ö, ü and ß. Search engines generally treat ü and ue as the same, and Straße and Strasse too, but your own site should not leave that to chance. Domains with umlauts have been allowed for years, yet they turn into long encoded strings when shared, and most German sites write ae, oe, ue and ss in their slugs.

Then there are compound nouns. German joins words: Rechtsschutzversicherung is one word for legal expenses insurance, and a buyer may type it whole or split it in a search. Anchors that break a compound into separate English-style words read as translated.

  • One slug rule, applied everywhere, so a keyword is never split across two addresses.
  • Proper letters in titles and text, because German readers expect to see ü and ß where they belong.
  • Anchors in natural German, compounds intact, with the variations real writers use.

German readers check who is behind a site

German-speaking markets put weight on trust signals. Most commercial sites in Germany and Austria are legally required to publish an Impressum, a notice naming who runs the site and how to reach them, and Swiss online businesses usually publish similar details. Readers look for it. So do editors deciding whether to mention a business at all.

Paid content is treated with the same seriousness. German rules require advertising to be recognisable, so sponsored articles carry labels such as Anzeige or Werbung, and Google expects paid links to be marked as sponsored. We plan German campaigns around editorial articles that earn their place, and where an outlet labels a piece as sponsored, it is labelled. A profile built on hidden paid links is the kind that fails when Google looks closely.

before we pitch German outlets, we can check your Impressum, privacy notice and about pages, because editors will.

Why German links still carry so much weight

Every year brings a new claim that backlinks no longer count, and they count no matter the date. Google, and German-founded alternatives like Ecosia that draw on partner search results, look at content quality, speed and structure as well. But without some really good backlinks, a German page will never pop up in search, will not rank, and will be drowned out by competitors who have built their links for years.

AI search works the same way. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot draw on pages other sites cite. Links remain a major indicator that a website should even be looked at, and a German page nobody in the German-speaking web references is unlikely to be the source an answer quotes.

The German-language outlets that pass real value

The German web is unusually rich in specialist and regional publishing. Get Found has a large network of authors and outlets, and in German-speaking markets we look for:

  • Regional newspapers and city portals. Germany's regional press is strong, and local news sites in every federal state are read daily by the customers a local business needs.
  • Trade and specialist portals. Industry portals, known as Fachportale, cover everything from mechanical engineering to dentistry, with expert readers.
  • Associations and chambers. Industry associations and regional business networks that list and mention their members.
  • Austrian and Swiss outlets. National, regional and niche sites read in Vienna, Graz, Zurich, Bern and Basel.
  • Niche blogs. German-speaking writers on technology, parenting, cars, travel, finance, food and much more.

We avoid poor or spammy websites with no relevance to your product or service, in German or any other language. An unrelated link from a site nobody reads does nothing for you and can attract the wrong attention.

A translated site with English links goes nowhere in Germany

The familiar story: a company translates its site into German and waits for German traffic. The domain has English links and no German ones. Every anchor is English, every referring site is read by English speakers, and no German, Austrian or Swiss site mentions the new pages. To a search engine, nothing suggests that German speakers know the business exists.

A German page cited by German-language news, trade portals and blogs looks like part of the German web, and search engines are far more willing to rank it. Every article we place is written by a native author for that outlet, because German editors reject translated text, and German readers rarely finish it.

Building your German link profile with Get Found

We start by choosing among Germany, Austria and Switzerland, then map who ranks in each for your searches and who links to them. We agree topics, match each to an outlet whose readers care, and commission a native author from that market. Every link sits inside an article worth reading for its own sake, so the profile can keep its strength through Google updates and through any attack by a competitor.

German clients get this through a direct relationship with a leading provider of Backlink Building Services. German is one part of our backlink building services. The backlink company page explains how a plan fits your budget, and our backlinks building service lists every language and niche. For Swiss buyers in Romandie and Ticino, see French link building and backlinks for Italian sites. Neighbouring markets are covered on our Dutch backlinks page and our Polish link building page. When you are ready, contact us about your German-language site.

The questions that come up every time.

Do I need separate pages for Germany, Austria and Switzerland?

If your prices, delivery, legal terms or product names differ, yes. Each version gets hreflang de-DE, de-AT or de-CH, and each needs links from its own country. If the offer is identical everywhere, one German version can serve all three, but the link plan should still draw from Austrian and Swiss outlets as well as German ones, so that search engines see readers in all three countries.

Should German URLs use umlauts?

Domains and URLs with umlauts are possible, but they get encoded into long strings of characters when shared and some tools handle them badly. Most German sites write ae, oe and ue, and ss for ß, in their slugs, while keeping the proper letters in titles and body text. The important part is choosing one rule and sticking to it, so a keyword never ends up with two addresses.

Do backlinks still matter for German websites?

Yes. Content, technical quality and site structure count, and we look at all of them, but links remain one of the clearest signs to Google and to AI search tools that a page deserves attention. German results in competitive sectors are often held by long-established sites with years of German links, and a new page without any rarely gets near them.

What is an Impressum and why does it affect links?

An Impressum is a legal notice naming who runs a website, with contact details. German and Austrian law require one on most commercial sites, and Swiss online businesses usually publish similar details. Readers look for it, and so do editors deciding whether to mention or link to you. A missing or vague one makes a site look untrustworthy in these markets before anyone reads a word.

Who writes the German articles?

Native German authors, matched to the country and the outlet. A writer from Vienna knows to write Jänner rather than Januar for an Austrian site, and a Swiss writer drops the ß. German editors are quick to reject translated or careless text. Every article must be worth reading without the link, which keeps it published and keeps the link counting.
