Japanese Backlinks for Google and Yahoo! Japan
For companies with a Japanese-language site, or a foreign brand selling into Japan, that needs Japanese searchers to find it. We place links on Japanese outlets, written by native authors, so Google and Yahoo! Japan read your site as part of the Japanese web.
“A Japanese page earns trust when Japanese publishers with real readers decide to cite it.”
No obligation. Tell us what you sell and where, and a person replies.
- Two front doors, one plan. Google and Yahoo! Japan both send Japanese searchers to you, and the same Japanese links carry you on both.
- Written in Japanese, not translated into it. Native authors write every article in the register a Japanese editor and reader expect.
- Japanese outlets, pointed at Japanese pages. Links from sites Japanese readers visit, aimed at the Japanese URLs that need them.

The best way to build "Japanese backlinks, but better yet, backlinks for your Japanese-language site" is to contact us directly. Japan is one of the hardest markets for a foreign brand to enter by translation alone, because the Japanese web judges a site by who in Japan vouches for it, and that part cannot be translated. Most of the work in Japan comes down to earning links from Japanese sites.

Japan has two search front doors, and they share one index
Outside Japan, search usually means Google. Inside Japan, a great many searches still begin on Yahoo! Japan, the portal plenty of households set as their home page years ago and never changed. Its web results have been powered by Google's engine for well over a decade, so a site that ranks on Google tends to rank on Yahoo! Japan as well, and the same links carry it on both.
What differs is the portal around the results. Yahoo! Japan is a portal first: news, a long-running question and answer community, shopping, auctions and local listings all sit around the search box. A mention inside those sections reaches people who never type a query. Bing has a smaller Japanese audience, mostly through Windows and Edge defaults, and it feeds Microsoft Copilot.
Then there is AI search. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode answer in Japanese, and so do ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Each of them leans on pages the wider web already treats as credible, and for a Japanese answer that credibility comes from Japanese sources.
- Google. The engine behind most Japanese web results, on its own pages and on Yahoo! Japan's.
- The Yahoo! Japan portal. News, Q&A and listings where a mention reaches readers directly.
- Bing and Copilot. A smaller audience, and a source for Microsoft's AI answers.
- AI answers in Japanese. Overviews and chat answers that cite the Japanese pages already trusted.

Three scripts and no spaces change how a Japanese link reads
A Japanese sentence mixes kanji, hiragana and katakana, often with Latin letters and numbers in between, and it puts no spaces between words. The same product can be written three or four ways, and Japanese searchers use all of them. A word borrowed from English is usually katakana; a native word may be kanji or hiragana depending on the writer, the formality and the audience.
That variety helps with anchor text. When dozens of English sites repeat one exact phrase, the profile looks manufactured. A Japanese profile varies on its own, because writers choose different scripts, add particles and wrap the link around a phrase rather than a bare keyword. We let them. Forcing the same katakana keyword into every article is the Japanese version of the over-optimised anchors that get English sites into trouble.
Full-width, half-width and romaji
Japanese input produces full-width letters and numbers as well as the usual half-width ones, and older sites still mix the two. Search engines normalise most of it, but anchors that switch width mid-phrase look careless to a Japanese reader. Addresses raise the same question: Japanese characters in a URL are legal, but they turn into long percent-encoded strings when pasted into email or chat, so many Japanese sites use short romaji or English slugs. Either rule works, but a site that mixes both looks unfinished.
send us the Japanese terms your buyers use for your product and we will show you how many ways each one is written across the Japanese web.

An English site's links stop at the Japanese border
Many companies enter Japan the same way: translate the site, add a Japanese folder, and wait. Months later the Japanese pages are indexed and invisible. A translation copies the words, while the authority stays with the English pages. The links pointing at your English pages tell search engines that English-speaking readers trust them. They say very little about whether Japanese writers and publications vouch for the Japanese version.
Search engines are blunt about this. A Japanese query is answered with Japanese pages that other Japanese pages link to, cite and discuss. Your translated page competes with Japanese companies that have been covered by Japanese trade press, regional news and blogs for years. Without some of the same, it is drowned out, however good the translation.
That is our position on backlinks in every language. They are not the only factor, and we work on the others too, but they remain a major indicator that a website should even be looked at by search engines and by AI search. A page that no other site links to has no outside source vouching for it.
if your Japanese pages are indexed but not ranking, we will compare where their links come from with the Japanese competitors sitting above them.

A Japanese address tells readers who you are
The country domain is .jp, and Japanese readers notice it. General .jp names require a postal address in Japan, and .co.jp is limited to companies registered in Japan, one name per company, which is why buyers read it as a sign of a real local business. A foreign brand without a Japanese entity usually serves its Japanese pages from a subfolder or subdomain of its main site, and that ranks well too, as long as the choice is deliberate and consistent.
- Hreflang on every version. Japanese pages declare ja or ja-JP, point at each other language version, and each of those points back.
- Geotargeting by structure. A .jp domain targets Japan by itself; a subfolder relies on hreflang and on Japanese links to make the case.
- Local detail on the page. Prices in yen, Japanese address formats and Japanese-language support tell readers and engines the page is meant for Japan.
- Links that match the target. Japanese links point at Japanese URLs, not at the English home page.
International link building most often goes wrong on that last point. Links bought in bulk to a home page do nothing for a Japanese folder three clicks away. We aim every Japanese link at the Japanese page it is meant to lift.

The outlets Japanese readers trust
Japan's web has its own shape. National newspapers and broadcasters run large news sites, and regional papers still carry weight in prefectures where they are the paper of record. Trade and industry publications cover almost every sector, often in more depth than their Western counterparts. Around them sit the blog platforms where a great deal of Japanese writing lives, social bookmarking and curation communities, question and answer sites, comparison publications, and directories run by industry associations.
Low-grade, spammy sites with no connection to what you sell are off our list, and Japanese readers would spot them faster than any algorithm. In Japan that usually means fewer, slower placements: editors expect to see the finished article, the tone has to be right, and some outlets only cover a company with a Japanese point of contact. A profile built that way can hold up through Google updates and through attacks by a malicious competitor, because every placement in it is one we would show you openly.
Native authors write in the right register
Japanese has plain and polite registers, and the honorific forms of keigo shift with who is addressing whom. A machine-translated article gets the vocabulary right and the tone wrong, and Japanese editors turn it away. Every Japanese article we place is written by a native Japanese author for that outlet's readers, never translated from an English draft.
name your industry and we will describe the kinds of Japanese outlets that cover it before any placement is discussed.

Backlinks still decide who gets looked at in Japan
Every year someone announces that links no longer matter, and every year the Japanese results are still led by sites other Japanese sites point to. Backlinks still matter no matter the date. Without some really good ones, a Japanese site will not pop up in search, will not rank and will be drowned out by competitors who have spent years being cited by Japanese publications.
AI search has made that more important. When an AI answer recommends a supplier in Japanese, it draws on the sources the Japanese web already treats as credible. A brand with no Japanese mentions and no Japanese links gives it nothing to work with.
if a Japanese competitor shows up in AI answers and you do not, we will show you the Japanese sources that put them there.

How we build Japanese backlinks with you
Get Found is a leading provider of Backlink Building Services, and working with us directly gives you access to a large network of authors and outlets, native Japanese writers among them. We start with your Japanese pages and your competitors: which Japanese sites link to the companies above you, which of your pages deserve links first, and whether your domain and hreflang setup will let those links count. Then we agree the kinds of outlets, the topics and the anchors, and our authors write.
The strategy behind it is the same one our backlink company work sets for every client: the best plan your budget allows, with no shortcuts that a later update could punish. The whole category, niche campaigns included, sits under our backlink building services, and the full list of language and industry campaigns is on the backlinks building service page.
If Japan is one market among several, our guides to Vietnamese link building, backlinks for Malay-language sites and links for sites aimed at the Philippines explain how each one differs. When you are ready, send us your Japanese site and the searches you want to win, and we will reply with a link plan for your Japanese pages.

The questions that come up every time.
Do I need separate backlinks for Yahoo! Japan?
Not for its web results, which have come from Google's engine for well over a decade, so the links that lift you on Google lift you there too. Where Yahoo! Japan differs is the portal around the search box: news, its long-running question and answer community, shopping and local listings. Coverage or a well-placed mention in those places reaches readers who never search at all. We plan for both, but links from Japanese sites come first.
Will the links pointing at my English site help my Japanese pages?
A little, through the overall strength of the domain, but far less than most companies expect. Search engines answer Japanese queries with Japanese pages that other Japanese sources cite. English links say your English pages are trusted by English readers. They do not say that Japanese publications or writers vouch for your Japanese version, and that is the signal your Japanese competitors already have.
Should my Japanese page addresses use Japanese characters?
They can. Japanese characters are allowed in URLs and search engines read them, but they become long percent-encoded strings when copied into email or chat, which is why many Japanese sites use short romaji or English slugs. Both approaches rank. What hurts is inconsistency: some pages in Japanese characters, some in romaji, and a few in full-width letters. Pick one rule and apply it to the whole site.
Can you write the articles in English and have them translated?
No. Japanese editors reject machine-translated or obviously translated copy, and readers notice it in a sentence or two. Politeness levels, word choice and the way a Japanese article builds its argument all differ from English. Every Japanese article we place is written by a native Japanese author for that outlet's readers. You approve the topic and the angle; the author writes it in Japanese from the start.
Do I need a .co.jp domain to rank in Japan?
No. A .co.jp is limited to companies registered in Japan, and Japanese buyers do read it as a sign of a real local business, but foreign brands rank well from a Japanese subfolder or subdomain of their main site. What matters more is that the setup is consistent, hreflang is correct, the page shows Japanese prices and contact details, and Japanese links point at the Japanese pages.
Do backlinks matter for AI answers in Japanese?
Yes. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity all answer in Japanese, and all of them lean on pages and sources the wider Japanese web already treats as credible. Links and mentions from Japanese publications are how a brand earns that credibility. A company with no Japanese coverage gives an AI answer nothing to cite when it lists suppliers.
Ask yours. The form reaches the people who would be doing the work.
