  • Written in Croatian for Croatian outlets. Articles in standard Croatian by native writers, placed on Croatian sites rather than generic Balkan ones.

Start here.

The best way to build "Croatian backlinks, but better yet, backlinks for your Croatian-language site" is to contact us directly. Croatia is a small, close-knit web where editors know each other and readers notice a wrong word, and it sits beside neighbours whose languages look almost the same. The links that rank a Croatian site are written natively in Croatian and published on Croatian outlets.

The regional shortcut, and why it fails

Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin are mutually intelligible, which leads some link sellers to treat the region as one market. They place a Croatian client's links on Serbian or Bosnian sites, or on generic "regional" portals that publish for everyone and are read by no one in particular.

Google weighs a link by how relevant its source is to your audience, and a Croatian reader is the audience. A Croatian page supported by Serbian news sites tells Google that Serbia knows you, not Croatia. A Croatian page supported by Croatian portals, blogs and directories tells Google that Croatian readers know the business.

Readers notice too. Croatian uses only the Latin alphabet, its own month names (siječanj, veljača, ožujak), and its own everyday words: vlak for a train, kruh for bread, tjedan for a week. Copy that slips into Serbian or Bosnian forms reads as foreign within a line, and Croatian editors turn it down.

.hr, Google and an EU market

Croatia searches on Google, almost exclusively. It is a member of the European Union, and since 2023 it uses the euro and sits inside the Schengen area, which brought more Croatian businesses into cross-border trade and more foreign businesses into Croatia.

Links still decide a great deal of who gets seen there, no matter the date. Without some really good backlinks a Croatian site will never pop up in search, will not rank and will be drowned out by the competition. Links are not the only factor; content, speed, structure and local relevance all count. But a link profile is still a major indicator that a website should even be looked at, by Google and by the AI search tools that answer questions by citing a few trusted sources.

  • The .hr domain. Croatia's country code, trusted by Croatian readers and a clear local signal on its own.
  • A .com with a Croatian folder. Works as well, when hreflang hr-HR is correct and Croatian links point at the folder.
  • A translated page with English links. The setup that rarely ranks: a Croatian version nothing written in Croatian links to.

Č, ć, đ, š, ž and the searches typed without them

Croatian has 30 letters, five of them carrying diacritics that change words: č and ć are different sounds, and đ is its own letter. Copy and anchors need them right. Editors at good Croatian sites turn down articles with the wrong diacritics, because they look careless.

Searchers type more loosely. On a phone, ćevapi becomes cevapi and Šibenik becomes sibenik, and Google generally connects the forms. So you do not need unaccented pages to catch unaccented searches. You need correct Croatian on the page and in the anchors, and slugs written without diacritics so your addresses survive being shared.

A healthy Croatian anchor mix

  • Your brand name, written the way you write it.
  • Natural Croatian phrases that a Croatian writer would use for your product or service, in the correct case for the sentence.
  • Plain URLs, which is how many real citations look.

Croatian is a case language, so the same product name changes its ending inside a sentence. Native writers handle that without thinking; translated anchors usually get it wrong.

The page the anchor points at matters as much as the words. A link about your product should land on the Croatian page about that product, not on the home page and not on the English version, so the relevance the article carries reaches the page you want to rank.

Next step

ask us to review your Croatian anchors and slugs before new links point at them.

The coast needs two link profiles

Much of Croatia's economy faces the Adriatic, from Istria through Kvarner to Dalmatia and Dubrovnik. Hotels, apartments, marinas, tours and restaurants there sell to visitors from Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Poland, Czechia, the United Kingdom and beyond. Those visitors search in their own languages.

A coastal business usually needs Croatian links for its Croatian pages and foreign-language links for its foreign-language pages, rather than one mixed profile pointed at the home page. German travel writers should link to the German page; Croatian portals to the Croatian one. Our page on Czech backlinks covers one of the visitor markets, and backlinks for travel sites covers the tourism side.

Croatian outlets and the writers behind them

We never place your links on weak or spammy sites outside your subject. Get Found has deep relationships with Croatian PR outlets, niche bloggers who own their sites, influencers, and portals with real visitors whose links are worth having. In Croatian, the outlets that count fall into a few groups:

Outlet type What it gives a Croatian site
National news portals Reach across Croatia through their business, tech and lifestyle sections
Regional portals Local relevance in Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Zadar, Istria and Slavonia
Niche Croatian blogs Topical relevance from writers your buyers follow
Directories and chambers Trust from Croatian business listings and associations that are kept up to date

Every article is written natively in Croatian.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the diaspora

Croatian is also an official language of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Croatian-language outlets serve their own readers; pages for them take hreflang hr-BA. Beyond the region, long-standing Croatian communities in Germany, Austria, Australia, Canada, the United States and South America search in Croatian and in local languages, and their media are relevant links for businesses serving them.

How we build Croatian links with you

Croatian clients who work with us directly can use our large network of authors and outlets. A Croatian campaign starts with an audit, including how much of your profile comes from non-Croatian regional sites, then a plan for outlets, anchors and audiences, then native Croatian articles on relevant sites. Coastal businesses get the Croatian and foreign-language plans side by side.

The aim is a profile that will keep working through Google updates and survive a malicious competitor. We do not promise rankings or dates. What we stand behind is the quality of the outlets we use.

See our backlinks building service, how we plan a backlink strategy to your budget, and every niche and language we cover. Neighbouring markets include Serbian backlinks in both scripts and Hungarian-language links. When you are ready, contact us about your Croatian site.

The questions that come up every time.

Can I use Serbian or Bosnian sites to build links for a Croatian site?

Sparingly, and only where the site is genuinely relevant to your business. The languages are mutually intelligible, but Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian outlets serve different readers, and Google weighs links by their relevance to your audience. A Croatian page is best supported by Croatian outlets. Using regional sites as a shortcut usually produces links that look unrelated and do little for rankings in Croatia.

How is Croatian different from Serbian in practice?

Croatian is written only in the Latin alphabet, uses its own month names such as siječanj and veljača, and prefers different everyday words: vlak rather than voz for a train, kruh rather than hleb for bread, tjedan rather than nedelja for a week. Readers spot the other variant immediately. Our Croatian writers write standard Croatian natively, so the copy carrying your link reads as Croatian.

My business is on the coast. Do I need Croatian links at all?

If you only sell to foreign visitors, most of your links should be in your visitors' languages, pointed at those pages. But almost every coastal business also has Croatian customers, Croatian suppliers and Croatian press, and Croatian links pointed at Croatian pages help you rank for searches made in Croatia, including by locals recommending you. We usually plan both profiles together.

Do people in Croatia search without diacritics?

Often, especially on phones: cevapi instead of ćevapi, sibenik instead of Šibenik. Google generally connects the two forms. Your pages and anchors should still use correct diacritics, because that is what Croatian editors publish and readers expect. Slugs are usually written without diacritics so addresses survive being copied and shared.

Do backlinks still matter with AI answers on top of search?

Yes. AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity cite a handful of sources when they answer, and they favour sites the rest of the web already references. Links from trusted Croatian outlets help establish that. They are not the only factor, but they remain a major indicator that a site should even be looked at by search engines or AI search.

Next step

Ask yours. The form reaches the people who would be doing the work.
