Start here.

The best way to build "Ukrainian backlinks, but better yet, backlinks for your Ukrainian-language site" is to contact us directly. Ukraine's web has changed language in a few short years, and a link profile built for the old Ukrainian internet now points at an audience that has moved. The links that rank a site in Ukraine today are written in Ukrainian, on Ukrainian outlets, by people who write it natively.

The shift away from Russian-language content changed the link map

For a long time, a large part of the Ukrainian web published in Russian. Shops, news sites, forums and blogs ran Russian versions first, and plenty of Ukrainian businesses built their links on Russian-language pages, many of them on .ru domains, because that was where the volume was.

That has turned around. Ukraine's state-language law requires sites serving consumers in Ukraine to offer a Ukrainian version that opens by default, and since 2022 readers, publishers and businesses have moved to Ukrainian in large numbers by choice. Major outlets that once led in Russian now lead in Ukrainian or have dropped Russian altogether.

For link building, that means an old profile built on Russian-language pages now points at readers who have largely moved on. Links from Russian-language pages still exist in Google's index, but they say less and less about whether a Ukrainian site belongs in Ukrainian results. A profile built on .ru domains can also look strange to Ukrainian partners and journalists who check where you are mentioned.

Google is the search engine, and links still decide who it shows

Ukraine has one search engine that matters: Google. Yandex once took a serious share, but it has been blocked since 2017 along with other Russian web services, and Ukrainian search is now Google plus the AI tools built on top of search.

That is where links come in, no matter the date. Without some really good backlinks your Ukrainian site will never pop up in search, will not rank and will be drowned out by the competition that has them. Links are not the only factor; content, technical health and how well a page answers the query all count. But a link profile is still a major indicator that a website should even be looked at, by Google and by AI search tools such as AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity, which cite sources the rest of the web already trusts.

Ukrainian Cyrillic is not Russian Cyrillic

Both languages use Cyrillic, which fools people who do not read either. Ukrainian has 33 letters, including і, ї, є and ґ, which Russian does not use, and it does without several letters Russian relies on. A Ukrainian reader spots Russian-flavoured copy, or a machine translation from Russian, within a sentence. So does an editor deciding whether to publish an article with your link in it.

Spelling of place names matters as well. The capital is Kyiv, from the Ukrainian, not Kiev, from the Russian; the same goes for Kharkiv, Odesa and Lviv. Anchors, headlines and author bios should use the current Ukrainian forms. Outdated spellings make a page look foreign and out of date.

  • Native writers. Every article that carries your link is written in Ukrainian by a native writer, not translated from Russian or English.
  • Correct anchors. Brand names, product phrases and place names in the spelling Ukrainian outlets actually print.
  • Stable URLs. Ukrainian slugs are usually transliterated into Latin letters; pick a scheme and keep it, because links point at fixed addresses.
Next step

ask us to check your Ukrainian copy and anchors for Russian spellings before you build anything new on them.

Why a translated Ukrainian page with English links stays invisible

Plenty of foreign companies enter Ukraine by translating their site and pointing their existing English links at it. The Ukrainian pages appear in Google's index, but nothing written in Ukrainian links to them, so Google has no reason to prefer them over Ukrainian competitors with local links. To Google, a translated page with only English links looks like an outsider in Ukrainian search.

More English links will not fix this. Ukrainian-language articles on Ukrainian outlets will, pointed at the Ukrainian pages and backed by correct hreflang (uk-UA, not to be confused with en-GB for the United Kingdom) so Google shows the right version to the right searcher. A .ua or .com.ua domain adds a clear country signal; a .com site with a Ukrainian folder can rank just as well when the links point there.

Who links in Ukraine now

Ukraine has its share of link farms built to sell to foreigners, and we skip them, along with any site unrelated to your business. The outlets worth a link fall into four groups:

Source Why it counts for a Ukrainian site
National news and business media Authority, reach and the trust of Ukrainian editors
Regional portals Local relevance in Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv and other cities
Niche Ukrainian blogs Topical relevance in IT, agriculture, finance, parenting, travel and more
Directories and associations Ukrainian business listings and industry bodies that people still use

We work with press contacts, niche bloggers, influencers and sites whose visitors are real. On a Ukrainian campaign those contacts are Ukrainian-language publishers, and the writing is done natively in Ukrainian.

The diaspora and the displaced

Large numbers of Ukrainians live abroad: long-settled communities in Canada and the United States and newer ones in Poland, Germany, Czechia and across Europe. They search in Ukrainian and in the local language, and Ukrainian community media abroad can be a strong, relevant link for services aimed at them. We plan those links as a separate audience from the domestic one.

How we build Ukrainian links with you

Hiring Get Found directly puts our Ukrainian writers and outlets to work for you, since link building is what we do first. A Ukrainian campaign starts with an audit of your current profile, including how much of it is Russian-language, then a plan naming outlet types and anchors, then native Ukrainian articles placed on relevant sites. Any links from Russian-language sites that look manipulative are flagged for you, not silently left in place.

Our target is a Ukrainian profile that comes through Google's updates and any competitor's sabotage, built in the language Ukraine reads today. Nobody can honestly name the week your pages reach the top, and we will not pretend to.

Read more on our backlinks building service, see how we plan a backlink strategy for your budget, or browse every niche and language on our backlink building hub. Nearby markets include Czech backlinks, Slovak-language links and Bulgarian backlinks in Cyrillic. When you are ready, contact us about your Ukrainian site.

The questions that come up every time.

Should a site for Ukraine still have a Russian version?

That is a business decision, but it should not be the main version. Ukraine's state-language law requires sites serving consumers in Ukraine to offer a Ukrainian version that opens by default, and Ukrainian readers increasingly expect it. If you keep a Russian version for a specific audience, treat it as secondary, give it its own hreflang, and do not point your Ukrainian link building at it. Links should go to the Ukrainian pages you want to rank.

Do my old links from Russian-language sites hurt me?

Not automatically, and we do not recommend panic disavowing. But they help less than they used to, because the audience and the relevance have moved. Links from .ru domains in particular carry little weight for a Ukrainian business and can look odd to Ukrainian partners. The fix is to build a Ukrainian-language profile that outweighs them. We review the old links and flag any that look manipulative or harmful.

Is Google the main search engine in Ukraine?

Yes. Google handles almost all search in Ukraine. Yandex, which once had a large share, has been blocked since 2017 along with other Russian web services. That means your Ukrainian link building should be planned around how Google evaluates Ukrainian-language results, and around the AI search tools such as AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity that Ukrainians also use.

What is the right hreflang code for Ukrainian?

uk, usually written uk-UA for Ukraine. It is easy to confuse with the United Kingdom, whose English pages use en-GB, and we see that mistake often. A Ukrainian page tagged en-GB, or a British page tagged uk, sends the wrong version to the wrong searcher. If your site also serves the diaspora, you can add uk without a country, or uk-PL and similar, where you have pages written for them.

Can you build links for a Ukrainian business that sells abroad?

Yes. Many Ukrainian companies, especially in software, design, agriculture and manufacturing, sell mostly to foreign buyers. They need two profiles: Ukrainian links for the Ukrainian site and its domestic reputation, and English or other language links for the export pages. We plan both together and keep each pointed at its own version, so neither set is wasted on the wrong audience.
